CLARKSDALE – The Lions of East Mississippi Community College continued their recent hot streak in division play by sweeping Coahoma, 8-0 and 8-4, in doubleheader baseball action Friday afternoon. The twinbill was moved up one day due to Saturday’s rainy forecast throughout much of the state.

Keyed by solid pitching performances from Kameron Heiser and Gabe Franks, EMCC hurlers allowed a total of only nine hits by Coahoma on the afternoon. With their second doubleheader sweep in a week’s span, the Lions improved to 6-2 within the MACJC’s North Division.

“We’re very excited about being 6-2 within the division,” EMCC first-year head coach Chris Rose noted. “I thought Kameron (Heiser) and Gabe (Franks) threw exceptionally well today, especially considering that the games were moved up a day. We’re now beginning to capitalize on our opponents’ mistakes and turn those errors into multiple-run innings for us.”

In the opener, Heiser threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout against the home-standing Tigers to raise his record to 2-3 on the year. The former West Lauderdale High School standout fanned six batters and walked only one while allowing two singles and a double over seven scoreless innings of work.

Offensively, the Lions used a five-run fourth inning to get out to the comfortable lead. EMCC’s 12-hit attack was paced by Zane Migues’ 3-for-4 outing, which included a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Former Caledonia standout Tyler Aldridge, fellow sophomore Mitch Bohon and freshman Tyler Bonaventure all contributed two singles apiece for the visitors in the first contest.

The nightcap featured another quality mound performance by freshman Gabe Franks, who moved to 2-1 on the season with the victory. The former New Hope High School product went 6.1 innings, surrendering only five hits and four unearned runs while striking out four and issuing just one walk before giving way to sophomore Justin Pritchett for the final two outs.

With six hits as a team in the second game, the Lions received two hits apiece from Bohon, Antwan Ratcliff and Spencer Wilson. Bohon, from West Point’s Oak Hill Academy, finished with four hits on the afternoon.

Now 7-19 overall on the season following a 1-18 start, the Lions of East Mississippi step out of the division by playing host to Bevill State-Fayette in a Tuesday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on the Scooba campus. The following day, EMCC resumes MACJC North Division action by entertaining Northwest Mississippi CC in a Wednesday twinbill set for a 3 p.m. start at Gerald Poole Field.
