| East Mississippi begins two-game homestand by hosting Mississippi Delta Tuesday |
![]() Coaches Mark White and Sharon Thompson will lead their respective EMCC basketball teams this week in key home North Division matchups against Mississippi Delta and Holmes on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. The EMCC teams will stay at home to welcome divisional foe Holmes Community College on Thursday (Jan. 22) with 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. tip-offs in Scooba. Coach Sharon Thompson’s 10-4 EMCC women’s team will look to rebound from last week’s 77-71 road setback to Itawamba. Winners of six of their last eight decisions, the Lady Lions are led in scoring and rebounding by sophomore forward Angelique Burtts. The Georgia State signee averages a team-best 13.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, while having registered three double-doubles in her last five outings. Former Southeast Lauderdale standout Martika Hull is averaging 11.4 points per contest on 63-percent shooting from the field, in addition to pulling down 5.8 boards a game to rank third on the team. Sophomore point guard Kottia White from Jackson Murrah adds 9.9 points, 3.2 assists and 2.3 steals for EMCC. Having most recently posted an impressive 85-83 road triumph over Itawamba a week ago in Fulton, coach Mark White’s 9-5 Lions have now won eight of their last 10 decisions. The EMCC men are paced by freshman guard Coco Ware, who enters the week ranked 23rd nationally in scoring (21.1 ppg) and seventh in steals (3.4 spg). The former Starkville High School star is averaging 24.5 points over his last 11 outings. Sophomore Darian Donald from Caledonia High School averages 13.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per contest, while Starkville High School product Woodie Howard ranks as the team’s third double-digit scorer on the year at 10.1 points. Coming off a clutch 16-point effort on 8-of-12 field-goal shooting in last week’s two-point win at Itawamba, Howard leads the Lions with an average of 7.3 rebounds an outing. |
