| East Mississippi CC touts four teams and five student-athletes with NJCAA academic honors |

SCOOBA – For the second year in a row, four East Mississippi Community College sports teams have earned academic recognition from the National Junior College Athletic Association. In addition, five EMCC student-athletes have collected NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards, as announced this week by the NJCAA office headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Headlined for the third consecutive year by EMCC’s softball program with a school-best 3.31 composite grade point average, three East Mississippi squads posted collective team GPAs of 3.15 or higher. Women’s basketball and men’s golf were next on EMCC’s academic scorecard at 3.16 and 3.15, respectively, to repeat as NJCAA All-Academic Team honorees. Men’s basketball rounded out EMCC’s team selections with an even 3.00 team GPA, while the Lions’ NJCAA national championship football team and baseball club just missed the 3.00 GPA requirements by posting composite team grade point averages of 2.91 and 2.89, respectively. Individually, softball standout Shelby Whitt paced EMCC’s quintet of academic recipients with a 3.86 cumulative grade point average to garner the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement with a GPA between 3.80 and 3.99 on a 4.00 scale. The Houston, Miss., native was tabbed Miss EMCC for the Scooba campus in addition to being voted EMCC’s Homecoming Queen this past fall. Two-time MACJC All-State golfer Weston Wallace, of Northwest Rankin, also claimed the NJCAA’s Superior Academic Achievement honor with a 3.81 GPA while competing for head coach Dale Peay’s Lions. A trio of EMCC student-athletes collected the NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement for putting together cumulative grade point averages between 3.60 and 3.79. Former Clarkdale High School softball product Cory Roberson posted a 3.77 composite GPA while earning MACJC All-North Division Second Team laurels as a sophomore for head coach Kate Neely’s Lady Lions squad. Leading the way in the classroom for head football coach Buddy Stephens’ 2011 NJCAA Champions with a 3.68 GPA was MACJC All-North Division offensive lineman Derrick Wilson, of Horn Lake High School, who joined the Ole Miss Rebels as a walk-on this spring. Outfielder Spencer Wilson, of Stone High School, topped head baseball coach Chris Rose’s Lions with a 3.64 cumulative GPA to also earn NJCAA Exemplary Academic Achievement recognition. Marking the 29th year the NJCAA has recognized the success of its student-athletes in the classroom, the 2011-12 academic year saw 450 teams qualify for academic team accolades. In addition, more than 1,680 NJCAA student-athletes met the requirements for individual academic honors. All total, nearly 60,000 student-athletes competed in the NJCAA during the 2011-12 academic year on more than 3,500 teams in 28 different sports. |
