SCOOBA – Topping this year’s East Mississippi Community College baseball team in virtually every offensive statistical category, sophomore outfielder Leroy Wilson has earned 2012 MACJC All-State/North Division First Team honors.  As selected during this week’s annual meeting of MACJC baseball coaches in Jackson, EMCC freshman pitcher Smokey Ethridge and sophomore infielder Zane Migues were also accorded second-team accolades.

A product of Columbus High School, Wilson led head coach Chris Rose’s EMCC Lions with a .326 batting average along with seven home runs and 28 runs batted in.  The 6-foot-7 Wilson also topped EMCC with 42 hits, 31 runs scored and 10 stolen bases in 12 attempts.  In addition to tying for the club lead with eight doubles and three triples, the former Coahoma Community College transfer paced the Lions with 18 extra-base hits, which accounted for a team-most 77 total bases and a .597 slugging percentage for the year.

On the mound for the Lions, Ethridge led EMCC with a 6-2 pitching record this past spring.  The freshman right-hander allowed just 39 hits and gave up 26 earned runs in 49.1 innings of work on the year.  The former West Lauderdale High School standout also posted a 2:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio by fanning 38 batters and issuing just 19 bases on balls during his 13 pitching appearances.

Migues, from Lafayette, La., was EMCC’s second-leading hitter with a .325 batting average in addition to tying Columbus’ Josh Tentoni and fellow Louisiana native Tyler Bonaventure for second-place team honors with three home runs this past season.  The versatile Migues, who primarily played shortstop during the latter portion of the year after beginning the season behind the plate, scored 19 runs and also knocked in 15 runs.

As a team, the 2012 EMCC Lions went 19-24 overall and 10-13 in MACJC North Division play but battled until the final weekend of the regular season before falling just short of a second straight appearance in the MACJC State Baseball Playoffs.
