EMCC Lady Lions complete softball season with 9-1 loss to No. 3 Jones in state tourney opener Print E-mail
FULTON – East Mississippi Community College’s softball season came to an end Thursday afternoon with a 9-1 run-rule setback to third-ranked Jones County Junior College in an opening-round game of the MACJC State Softball Tournament being held at the Itawamba Community College Softball Complex.

The Lady Bobcats chased EMCC starting pitcher Shelby Sheppard after they put the first six batters of the second inning on base.  By that point, JCJC had opened up a 5-0 lead with a solo tally in the first frame and four more runs the next inning.

Meanwhile, JCJC standout right-hander Ginger Lonergan held the Lady Lions scoreless with only three singles through the first four innings.  EMCC finally scratched out its lone run of the game and cut the deficit to 5-1 in the fifth inning on singles by Amber Spann, Paige Sheppard and Stormy Lewis.

But that’s the only offense the Lady Lions could muster off Lonergan, who improved to 18-3 on the year by scattering six hits and striking out 10 in six innings of work.  JCJC closed out its 37th win of the year with a pair of runs off EMCC reliever Misty Richard in both the fifth and sixth innings.  The run-rule decision for the Lady Bobcats came with one out in the sixth when Richard walked pinch-hitter K.T. Perkins with the bases loaded to account for the eight-run margin.

Offensively for EMCC, Paige Sheppard led the way with two singles in three at-bats, while Spann, Cory Roberson and Shelby Whitt also added singles.  In the circle, Shelby Sheppard took the loss for the Lady Lions to fall to 8-6 on the year.

Making their fourth consecutive appearance in the MACJC State Softball Tournament, head coach Kate Neely’s EMCC Lady Lions concluded their 2012 campaign with an 18-24 overall record after earning the MACJC North Division’s No. 4 seed with a break-even 12-12 division mark.
