| EMCC shuts out Henry Ford CC 13-0 before dropping 15-5 decision to Co-Lin in baseball nightcap |

WESSON – The East Mississippi Community College baseball team efficiently produced 13 runs on 13 hits in shutting out Henry Ford Community College in the first of two games the Lions played Tuesday afternoon at Sullivan Field on the campus of Copiah-Lincoln Community College. In the nightcap, EMCC dropped a 15-5 decision to the home-standing Co-Lin Wolfpack.
In the opener against the Michigan-based HFCC Hawks, six of the Lions’ 13 hits went for extra bases. EMCC also had four different players record multiple hits, highlighted by Austin Braddock’s 3-for-3 effort. The former Heritage Academy standout singled in each of the first two innings and added a run-scoring double in the third. After scoring four runs in the first inning and three more in the second, the Lions used the long ball to do most of their damage in the third inning. Prior to Braddock’s double, former Columbus High School products Josh Tentoni and Leroy Wilson both belted home runs three batters apart. Tentoni’s first collegiate blast was a solo shot to left field, while Wilson’s first homer of the year also drove home Aaron Brady, who had reached first after being hit by a pitch. EMCC completed the run rule-shortened contest with two more tallies in the fourth and final inning. After Zane Migues led off the frame with a double, courtesy runner Cody Berryhill was brought home by Ismael Reyes’ RBI single. Migues, from Lafayette, La., had earlier contributed a two-run single in the first frame. Brady, of South Jones High School, delivered the Lions’ 13th run of the contest with a triple to left field to plate Reyes. With the Lions clicking on offense in the opener, freshman right-hander Smokey Ethridge was rolling along on the mound as well. The former West Lauderdale product moved to 2-0 on the season with the four-inning shutout. Along with scattering three singles, Ethridge had four strikeouts and only one walk. In the nightcap versus host Co-Lin, the Lions owned a 5-2 lead after their half of the third inning with most of the damage coming with two outs. Following Brady’s leadoff single, Braddock smacked his fourth hit of the day to give EMCC an early 1-0 lead. The visitors answered Co-Lin’s two-run first with three more scores in the second and another tally in the third. Alex Chick, of Hernando, helped set the table in the second with his first of three walks in the nightcap. Tentoni’s two-out single preceded Brady’s second triple of the day and a subsequent run-producing double by Wilson. EMCC’s fifth and final run of game two came on Holden Watts’ first of two singles in the contest. Braddock opened the third reaching via a hit-by-pitch and moved to second on Chick’s second walk to set up Watts’ RBI single. Brady and Wilson also added singles to give the Lions three multi-hit performers in the nightcap. EMCC added nine hits as a team in the second game following its 13-hit attack in the opener. The Lions’ 5-2 advantage was short-lived, however, as Jarvis Wilbert’s two-out, three-run home run highlighted Co-Lin’s four-run third inning to put the home team back in front 6-5. The Wolfpack’s two-out efficiency was also showcased an inning later when they sent 11 batters to the plate. Chasing EMCC starting pitcher Blake Hutcheson and middle reliever Tyler Jones from the contest in the game-changing fourth inning, Co-Lin scored seven runs after the first two outs had been recorded, including a stretch where seven consecutive hitters reached base safely by way of five singles, an error and a hit batsman. The Wolfpack picked up two more runs in the fifth inning off EMCC reliever K.C. Abney to account for the final run-rule decision. Hutcheson, the Lions’ sophomore left-hander, dropped to 0-2 on the year. Chandler Ramsey picked up the victory for Co-Lin with relief help from Tripp Jolly. After playing 10 straight games away from home, head coach Chris Rose’s 4-10 EMCC Lions are slated to play at home for the first time since Feb. 15 when they welcome Garden City (Kan.) Community College to Scooba for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at EMCC’s Gerald Poole Field. |
