POPLARVILLE – Playing their fourth consecutive baseball doubleheader on the road, the East Mississippi Community College Lions dropped a pair of contests, 7-3 and 10-0, to Pearl River Community College late Friday afternoon at Wildcat Field.
The EMCC-PRCC doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at EMCC’s Gerald Poole Field, but impending additional rain in the Scooba area prompted the contests to be moved to Poplarville. The Lions haven’t played a game on their home baseball field since Feb. 15. The switch in game locations didn’t seem to faze the road-weary Lions at first, as they answered the Wildcats’ two-run second inning with two scores of their own in the top of the third. Following a lead-off single by Leroy Wilson, of Columbus, and a walk to Aaron Brady, former Heritage Academy standout Austin Braddock bunted over both base runners. An infield out by Tyler Bonaventure and a run-scoring single by Alex Chick knotted the score at 2-2. Following the lone rain delay of the afternoon, Pearl River got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the third. The Wildcats then chased EMCC starting pitcher Blake Roberts with a three-run fifth inning. Roberts, from New Hope High School, allowed nine hits and five runs while striking out three and walking two. After PRCC added a solo tally in the sixth to make it 7-2 heading into the final frame, the visitors managed to get the potential-tying run to the plate in the seventh. Sophomore infielder Brett Tortorich led off with a double to the opposite field. After Holden Watts walked and Tortorich stole third, Wilson drove home EMCC’s third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left field. Brady was then hit by a pitch and Bonaventure walked to load up the bases with two outs. However, Chick’s grounder to third forced out Brady to end the opening game. In the nightcap, the Wildcats opened with a five-run first inning off EMCC starting pitcher Landon Meadows, though all but one of those runs were unearned as a result of two costly infield errors by the Lions. East Mississippi used five different pitchers in the second game. While the visitors were being doubled in the hits column for the second straight game, PRCC hurlers Brandon Pennington and Trace Robinson limited the Lions to just four hits in the nightcap. EMCC was out-hit, 14-7, in the opener with just one extra-base hit. The Wildcats did all of their scoring damage in three separate innings, adding two runs in the second and three more in the sixth before the game was called due to the 10-run rule. Sending just 24 batters to the plate in the nightcap, the Lions were only able to get two runners into scoring position in game two. EMCC’s four hits in the nightcap were split between sophomore Zane Migues, who had a fourth-inning triple, and freshman catcher Josh Tentoni. Making his first start of the year, Tentoni, of Columbus, had singles in the third and fifth frames. Coach Chris Rose’s 3-9 EMCC Lions will have their fifth consecutive road doubleheader by traveling to Wesson to take on Copiah-Lincoln Community College Tuesday afternoon. In a schedule addition, the Lions are slated to play host to Garden City (Kan.) Community College on Saturday (March 10) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at EMCC’s Gerald Poole Field on the Scooba campus. |
