EMCC Lady Lions move to 3-1 with DH softball sweep of Hinds Monday at Clarkdale High School Print E-mail
MERIDIAN – Undeterred by a chilly drizzle, the East Mississippi Community College Lady Lions registered a pair of 10-2 softball victories Monday afternoon against Hinds Community College in a doubleheader played at Clarkdale High School.

Clarkdale alumnus Alex Smith opened the twinbill sweep with a first-inning single up the middle and later scored on a single by Stormy Lewis.  Hinds knotted the score with a solo tally in the third inning, but the Lady Lions countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to stake winning pitcher Misty Richard to a 4-1 lead.  Fellow Clarkdale product Logan Bozeman keyed EMCC’s third inning with a two-run triple to left field.

After adding a solo tally in the fourth, the Lady Lions put up three more runs in the fifth and capped the 10-2, run-ruled victory in the opener with two more scores in the sixth.

At the plate, EMCC’s 10-hit attack in the first game was highlighted by Lewis’ 4-for-4 effort, including a pair of runs batted in.  Smith was 3-for-4 with a double, while former Clarkdale teammate Bozeman went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

In the circle, Richard moved to 2-0 on the year with the complete-game victory in the opener.  The former West Lauderdale standout allowed just three hits and only one earned run while striking out five and walking a pair.

East Mississippi’s offensive barrage continued in the nightcap with the Lady Lions ringing up four-run innings in the first two frames to give winning pitcher Shelby Sheppard the luxury of an early 8-0 lead.  Lewis’ two-run, bases-loaded single keyed the initial inning, while Paige Sheppard’s two-run double to left-center field highlighted EMCC’s second inning.

After the Lady Eagles cut the deficit to 8-2 with a pair of scores in the fourth inning to break up Sheppard’s shutout attempt and no-hit bid, EMCC got those two runs back a frame later to complete the doubleheader sweep with another 10-2, run-ruled triumph.

As a team, the Lady Lions banged out 10 more hits in the nightcap.  Smith again led the way with another 3-for-4 outing to finish the day 6-for-8 at the plate.  Lewis went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to complete a 6-for-7 afternoon.  Paige Sheppard, from Southeast Lauderdale, also had multiple hits in the nightcap with a pair of doubles, three runs batted in and two runs scored.

Shelby Sheppard, a right-hander from Kemper Academy, surrendered just a fourth-inning single to Mary Ann Allison.  In making her collegiate debut in the circle, Sheppard atoned for her pair of fourth-inning walks that contributed to Hinds’ scores with her two strikeouts in the fifth and final frame.

Head coach Kate Neely’s 3-1 EMCC Lady Lions will play host to defending MACJC State Champion East Central Community College Wednesday afternoon in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the EMCC Softball Field.  EMCC will then head to Perkinston on Friday to make up last week’s postponed doubleheader against Mississippi Gulf Coast CC, before participating in Saturday’s MCC/Rush Invitational at Meridian Community College.
