SCOOBA – In their first hardwood action in nearly a month, the East Mississippi Community College women’s basketball team dropped a 65-45 home decision to 15th-ranked Shelton State Community College Thursday evening at EMCC’s Keyes T. Currie Coliseum.
Idle since a 63-62 win at Wallace State-Hanceville on Dec. 10, the home-standing Lady Lions stayed within reach of the visitors throughout the opening 20 minutes of play and trailed by just seven points (30-23) at the intermission. However, the Lady Bucs quickly stretched the lead to 13 points (36-23) two minutes into the second stanza on back-to-back 3-pointers from Alexsis Brown and Brittany Agee. The EMCC women steadied the momentum for the next six minutes until going scoreless for nearly five minutes midway through the half. Being outscored 11-0 during the drought, the Lady Lions’ deficit increased from 12 points (42-30) at the 12:20 mark to 23 points (53-30) with less than eight minutes left. Head coach Sharon Thompson’s Lady Lions would get no closer than 19 points the rest of the way in having their two-game win string snapped and falling to 3-7 overall on the season. EMCC was led by sophomore guards Chadisty Hickman and Alvida Clemons with 14 and 10 points, respectively, though the backcourt tandem struggled with a combined 11-of-44 shooting from the field for the game. With their only two losses of the year having come against the nation’s No. 2 (Northwest Florida State) and No. 5 (Pensacola State) teams in the current NJCAA Top 20 women’s poll, the Lady Bucs of Shelton State improved to 11-2 with the 20-point road victory. Brown paced SSCC’s balanced scoring attack with 13 points, followed by Meghan Dunn and Brianna Lancaster with 10 points apiece. East Mississippi Community College will resume doubleheader hoops action next week on the road, as head coach Mark White’s 7-2 EMCC Lions will accompany the Lady Lions at East Central CC and at Meridian CC on Tuesday (Jan. 10) and Thursday (Jan. 12), respectively. |
