| East Mississippi begins home division hoops slate with Monday sweep of Northwest Mississippi |

SCOOBA – The East Mississippi Community College basketball teams opened home division play with a Monday doubleheader sweep over visiting Northwest Mississippi CC. The EMCC Lady Lions evened their league mark with a 71-56 victory, while the Lions used a 62-point second half to cruise to a 95-67 triumph in the nightcap at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum.
Following eight first-half ties in the women’s contest, head coach Sharon Thompson’s Lady Lions extended a slim 33-31 halftime edge to double digits (51-41) by the midway point of the second stanza. EMCC sophomore guards Alvida Clemons and Chadisty Hickman tallied 13 second-half points apiece to ignite EMCC’s surge after intermission. While generating much of their offense with baskets in transition, the Lady Lions also held Northwest to only 32 percent shooting from the field for the game, including just 26 percent in the second half. With Clemons and Hickman combining for 26 second-half points, freshman guard Jeraldine Campbell, of Noxubee County, came off the EMCC bench to collect 11 rebounds and dish out four assists after halftime. Clemons, a transfer guard from Northwest Florida State, finished with a season-high 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Hickman, from Kemper County, tallied her 21 points on 9-of-14 from the field with three 3-pointers in five attempts. Campbell, EMCC’s leading scorer on the year, totaled nine points, 12 rebounds and five assists for the game. The 2-6 EMCC Lady Lions, 1-1 in MACJC North Division play, will conclude their pre-holiday hoops slate with a Saturday afternoon contest at Wallace State CC-Hanceville. Falling to 6-3 overall and 0-2 in division play, the Northwest Lady Rangers were led by Monique Biggins’ double-double effort of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Erica Turner and Shaquilla Isom added 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the visitors. In Monday’s nightcap, head coach Mark White’s EMCC Lions steadily built on their 33-24 halftime advantage with aggressive defense and balanced scoring. The 28-point victory moved the East Mississippi men to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the MACJC’s North Division. With 16 first-half points on 7-of-10 shooting, sophomore guard D.J. Evans paced the home-standing Lions with 22 points for the second straight contest. The Brandon native also collected seven assists and four steals. Fellow sophomore Colin Borchert was the only other EMCC player in double figures with 14 points, though five other players contributed either eight or nine points to the winning effort. As a team, the Lions shot an even 50 percent (34-of-68) from the field on the night, including 54 percent in the second half, while maintaining a 46-38 advantage on the boards. Led by DeMarcus McVay’s game-high 25 points, the Northwest Rangers fell to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in division action. The EMCC men will close out their pre-holiday schedule with a Thursday (Dec. 8) home contest against Southern Sports Academy, out of Jackson. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus. The Lions opened the season with a 135-69 home thrashing of SSA back on Nov. 2. |
