| EMCC basketball teams return home to host East Central in hoops doubleheader Thursday |

SCOOBA – The East Mississippi Community College basketball teams will make their home season doubleheader debut Thursday evening on the Scooba campus by playing host to East Central Community College. A 5:30 p.m. women’s game will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. men’s contest at EMCC’s Keyes T. Currie Coliseum.
Playing at home for the first time this season, head coach Sharon Thompson’s EMCC Lady Lions look to get into the win column after three straight losses to begin the new season. After dropping narrow decisions to perennial NJCAA powers Pensacola State College (60-59) and Northwest Florida State College (57-53) during season-opening tournament action, Nov. 4-5, in Niceville, Fla., the East Mississippi women most recently fell, 93-55, at 15th-ranked Shelton State Community College this past Monday in Tuscaloosa. Individually, the Lady Lions have been sparked by former Noxubee County standout guard Jeraldine Campbell. The Shuqualak native has scored 20 or more points in each of her first three collegiate outings and is averaging a team-best 23.7 points per game on the year. Idle from game action for nearly two weeks following last Thursday’s postponement of their home contest against Meridian CC, head coach Mark White’s 17th-ranked EMCC Lions look to bounce back from their 88-67 road loss to now-No. 5 Northwest Florida State back on Nov. 5 in Niceville. The East Mississippi men, 2-1 on the year, tipped off their campaign with an easy 135-69 home triumph over Southern Sports Academy on Nov. 2, prior to claiming a convincing 79-49 win over Alabama Southern CC during opening-round action of NWF State’s tournament. Statistically, transfer forward Colin Borchert leads the Lions in scoring at 18.0 points an outing, while shooting 53 percent (20-of-38 FGs) from the field, including 5-of-10 from beyond the three-point arc, and 90 percent (9-of-10 FTs) from the line. The Phoenix, Ariz., native is also tied for the team lead with an average of 7.7 rebounds per contest. Guards D.J. Evans and Jalen Houston are also scoring in double figures on the year at 14.3 and 11.0 points per game, respectively. Both the Warriors and Lady Warriors of East Central are winless in six attempts thus far on the campaign. The East Mississippi basketball teams will go their separate ways next week in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday. The Lions will head east to Tuscaloosa to take on host Shelton State CC and Chattahoochee Valley CC on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, in the Southland International Classic. The Lady Lions will venture south to Perkinston to meet Alabama Southern CC and Baton Rouge CC on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, in the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic. |
