NICEVILLE, Fla. – With a second straight dominating second-half performance, the seventh-ranked East Mississippi Community College men’s basketball team breezed to a 79-49 neutral-site victory over Alabama Southern CC Friday afternoon in the Quality Inn Classic. Earlier in the day during the tip-off game of the two-day, Northwest Florida State College-hosted tournament, the EMCC Lady Lions opened their season with a narrow 60-59 loss to preseason No. 2-ranked Pensacola State College.
In Friday’s nightcap, head coach Mark White’s EMCC Lions outscored ASCC, 44-21, after halftime en route to the 30-point triumph. Earlier this week, the East Mississippi men used an 81-39 second-half explosion to rout visiting Southern Sports Academy, 135-69, Wednesday night in Scooba. Against Alabama Southern, the Lions got rolling following intermission by wearing down the Eagles with their depth and defensive pressure. Transfer forward Colin Borchert, of Phoenix, Ariz., pumped in a game-high 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting, including three 3-pointers, to pace the winners. Fellow sophomores Millaun Brown and D.J. Evans followed with 10 points apiece for EMCC. In their season debut against Pensacola State, head coach Sharon Thompson’s EMCC Lady Lions rebounded from a 31-22 halftime deficit to take the lead in the second stanza. East Mississippi managed to hold onto a one-point lead late into the contest, but the Lady Pirates took advantage of crucial EMCC turnovers and benefitted from timely offensive rebounding down the stretch to avoid a season-opening upset. Rated second in this year’s NJCAA Preseason Top 20 national poll, PSC was 36-1 last season and finished third in the NJCAA Women’s National Championship played in Salina, Kan. Former Noxubee County standout Jeraldine Campbell tallied a team-high 22 points for the Lady Lions in her collegiate debut. Transfer guard Alvida Clemons and sophomore backcourt mate Chadisty Hickman, of Kemper County, added 12 and eight points, respectively, for the EMCC women. Both East Mississippi basketball teams battle host Northwest Florida State College Saturday evening in tournament action at The Arena. Following the 5:30 p.m. women’s matchup, the No. 7 Lions will meet the 11th-ranked NWF State men’s squad in a battle of preseason-ranked teams. |
