_2011.jpg "Image") Head softball coach Kate Neely’s EMCC Lady Lions have earned a No. 5 national academic ranking in the NFCA Top 10 All-Academic team rankings for the second straight year by maintaining a 3.393 composite team grade point average during the 2010-11 academic year. Head coach Kate Neely’s EMCC Lady Lions maintained a composite team grade point average of 3.393 during the 2010-11 academic year to rank fifth nationally among all junior college softball programs for the second year in a row. EMCC’s softball program has also collected NJCAA All-Academic Team honors for the past two years. “We’re obviously ecstatic about our academic team accomplishments here at East Mississippi Community College,” noted Neely, who was tabbed the 2011 MACJC North Division Softball Coach of the Year after guiding the Lady Lions to a division championship, regional appearance and third straight berth in the MACJC state playoffs this past spring. “As coaches we know how hard our players work on the field, but sometimes we tend to forget the hours and effort they put forth to accomplish such high academic standards. (Assistant) Coach (Casey) Finch and I couldn’t be more proud.” The NFCA Academic Awards program honors both collegiate and high school teams for their submitted grade point averages for the 2010-11 academic year. As a second component of the program, all submitted student-athletes who achieved a 3.50 GPA this past academic year are named as NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes. The individual honorees will be announced next week on NFCA.org. With a team composite grade point average of 3.540, Illinois Central College unseated two-time, defending junior college winner Wallace State Community College-Hanceville of Alabama (3.485) for this year’s top honor. Iowa Western Community College and Salt Lake Community College followed close behind with respective team GPAs of 3.408 and 3.404. Other collegiate team academic leaders by divisional categories included: Tennessee Tech (3.619 – NCAA Division I); Central Missouri (3.533 – NCAA Division II); Northwestern College (3.694 – NCAA Division III); and Central Methodist (3.627 – NAIA). |
