EMCC Lions travel to Jones County for best-of-three MACJC baseball playoff series Print E-mail
SCOOBA – Set to make their first postseason appearance since 2004, the Lions of East Mississippi Community College will take on 14th-ranked Jones County Junior College in a best-of-three MACJC baseball playoff series set for Friday and Saturday in Ellisville.

Friday’s series opener pitting fourth-seeded EMCC, out of the MACJC’s North Division, and No. 1 South seed Jones County will take place Friday at 6 p.m. at JCJC’s Community Bank Park.  All games of this weekend’s EMCC-JCJC series will be nine-inning contests and are slated to be audiocast live on www.jcjc.tv.  Game 2 is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday with a third game, if necessary, slated to begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of the second contest.

First-year EMCC head coach Chris Rose’s Lions most recently secured the North Division’s fourth and final playoff spot by sweeping Northeast Mississippi, 9-0 and 2-1, this past Saturday in Scooba.  With an improved 16-27 overall record following a 1-18 start on the year, East Mississippi’s 14-10 record in division play marks the Lions’ best league record since the 1998 EMCC club went 18-7 to claim the MACJC’s North Division baseball title under the direction of former head coach Bill Baldner.

Guided by third-year head coach Christian Ostrander, the Bobcats of Jones County successfully defended their MACJC South Division regular-season title with a 19-5 league record this season.  Ranked 14th nationally in the current NJCAA Division II baseball poll, JCJC owns an overall record of 33-13 on the year.  The Bobcats are 107-41 in three seasons under Ostrander’s guidance.

Earlier this year (Feb. 12) in Ellisville, the visiting EMCC Lions were swept by Jones County by scores of 5-1 and 2-1.

In the other best-of-three MACJC baseball playoff series taking place this weekend, Holmes (North No. 1) hosts Pearl River (South No. 4), Mississippi Gulf Coast (South No. 2) entertains Itawamba (North No. 3), and East Central (South No. 3) travels to Northwest Mississippi (North No. 2).

The four winners coming out of this weekend’s best-of-three series will advance to compete in next week’s (May 12-14) MACJC State Baseball Tournament.  The four-team, double-elimination tournament will be hosted by the highest seeded MACJC South Division team remaining after this weekend’s opening-round series.
