AMORY – The East Mississippi Community College men’s golf team improved six strokes from Monday’s opening round to place fourth at this week’s NJCAA Region 23 Golf Championship held at River Birch Golf Club.
On the heels of their school-best runner-up finish at last week’s MACJC State Championship played at Deerfield in Canton, the EMCC Lions followed a first-day score of 314 with a final-round 308 to finish eight strokes behind third-place Copiah-Lincoln (304-310-614). EMCC’s 308 was the second-best team score of the closing round – just two shots behind eventual tournament champion Mississippi Gulf Coast on the final day. Paced by individual medalist Jared Smith (72-72—144), the Bulldogs of MGCCC added a final-day 306 to their opening-round 293 to capture their fourth consecutive NJCAA Region 23 team title and earn a berth in next month’s (May 17-20) NJCAA National Championship to be played at Goose Pond Colony in Scottsdale, Ala. Northwest Mississippi (294-312—606) finished seven strokes behind Gulf Coast to claim runner-up regional honors. Host Itawamba finished in fifth place at 660 (330-330). Individually for head coach Dale Peay’s EMCC Lions, sophomore Zack Bailey led the way with rounds of 75 and 74 to finish in a four-way tie for second place. With his two-day total of 149, the Caledonia product garnered All-Region 23 honors along with Smith, Austin Holt of Northeast Mississippi, and the Copiah-Lincoln tandem of Keaton Stamps and Bennett Ruschewski. EMCC sophomore Ian McAdams (79-76—155) and freshman Tyler Slocum (80-76—156) placed 15th and 16th, respectively, while all-state standout Weston Wallace (80-82—162) added a 24th-place showing. A freshman from Northwest Rankin High School, Wallace will compete at next month’s NJCAA Championship after having earned an automatic berth to the national tournament by claiming the MACJC’s Hubert Tucker Award for having the state’s lowest scoring average during the regular season. Freshman Andrew Spiers rounded out the Lions’ regional scorecard by finishing in 26th place with a two-round score of 168 (83-85). |
