EMCC freshman Weston Wallace has become the first golfer in school history to earn the MACJC’s coveted Hubert Tucker Award for posting the state’s lowest scoring average during the regular season.
SCOOBA – In preparation for this week’s MACJC State Golf Championship, East Mississippi Community College freshman Weston Wallace has earned the state’s Hubert Tucker Award for having the lowest composite scoring average among Mississippi’s junior college golfers during the 2011 regular season.

A former all-state linkster at Northwest Rankin High School, Wallace claimed the coveted honor by firing a season-best 69 to capture individual medalist honors during final-round action of this past week’s fourth MACJC spring event, hosted by EMCC at the Mississippi State University Golf Course.  As an automatic MACJC All-State First Team selection, Wallace becomes the first golfer in EMCC history to win an official MACJC golf event with the help of one of the best one-round scores ever posted on the school’s all-time leader board.

“This is a tremendous honor for Weston to be able to accomplish something that no other EMCC golfer has been able to do in school history,” EMCC golf coach Dale Peay noted.  “He’s had a very consistent and steady year as a freshman, and he is on one of those hot streaks right now for us.  Weston is a very competitive young man who strives to succeed in whatever he attempts, whether it’s on the golf course, in the classroom, or playing pickup basketball with his teammates.”

Finishing the regular season with a state-best 75.75 stroke average on the year, Wallace had to come from behind in becoming the first player in EMCC history to claim the state’s stroke average leader award, named in honor of a former Northeast Mississippi CC football coach killed in an 1995 automobile accident.  Entering the regular season’s fourth and final MACJC event (April 3-4 in Starkville) in third place among the state’s scoring average leaders, Wallace rebounded from an opening-round 77 with his 2-under-par 69 to win the event title by two strokes.  His final-round 69 – the second-lowest 18-hole total among MACJC golfers this season – enabled Wallace to edge Copiah-Lincoln’s Bennett Ruschewski by four strokes for the year’s MACJC scoring average title.

As the recipient of this year’s Hubert Tucker Award, Wallace also garners an automatic invitation to compete in next month’s NJCAA National Golf Championship, slated for May 17-20 at Goose Pond Colony in Scottsboro, Ala.  The Brandon native will become the second EMCC participant in three years to compete in the NJCAA Championship, joining 2009 MACJC All-State Second Team honoree and former Caledonia High School product Hal Larkin.

East Mississippi CC has now had MACJC All-State First Team golf selections each of the last two seasons.  A year ago, EMCC’s Michael Lauseng settled for runner-up honors for the 2010 Hubert Tucker Award after having maintained the state lead in scoring average heading into the final day of regular-season competition before giving way to Itawamba’s Alex Rowland.

This week’s MACJC State Golf Championship, hosted by Holmes Community College, will take place Monday and Tuesday (April 11-12) at Deerfield Country Club in Canton.
