MONTICELLO, Ark. – The East Mississippi Community College men’s rodeo team maintained its No. 4 regional standing with a fourth-place team finish at this weekend’s Boll Weevil Stampede Rodeo hosted by the University of Arkansas at Monticello. The seventh annual three-day rodeo event was held Thursday-Saturday at the Drew County Fairgrounds Arena.
In their first rodeo competition in more than a month, the EMCC Lions totaled 395 points at the UAM-hosted event to finish 55 points behind third-place Southern Arkansas University (450 points). Current NIRA Ozark Region team leader Missouri Valley College claimed team honors with a 60-point victory (575-515) over runner-up Murray State University.
In the women’s competition, current Ozark Region front-runners Tennessee-Martin and Southern Arkansas battled to a first-place tie with 390 team points apiece. The EMCC women earned a seventh-place team finish with 30 points.
Individually, EMCC freshman Winston Cheek, of Kosciusko, led the way for the Lions by claiming his second straight second-place finish with 160 points in the bull riding event.
Entering the UAM event leading the Ozark Region in steer wrestling, West Point native Will Lummus had to settle for a fifth-place showing (65 points) in the event this week. However, the former Oak Hill Academy product did share first-place honors (150 points apiece) with Troy’s Stetson Aldridge in the calf roping event. Lummus also teamed with Eupora’s Carson Bright to total 20 points for the Lions in team roping.
On the women’s side, EMCC’s A. Jae Buckley, of Prentiss, placed sixth in the breakaway roping competition.
Head coach Morgan Goodrich’s East Mississippi CC rodeo squad stays in-state to compete in this week’s (April 7-9) Landers Dodge Ranger Rodeo hosted by Northwest Mississippi Community College. The three-day event begins Thursday at NWCC’s Multipurpose Arena in Senatobia.
