| EMCC Lady Lions maintain division lead by earning softball split at Northwest Mississippi |

SENATOBIA – With a come-from-behind 7-4 win in the nightcap of Saturday’s softball doubleheader, the visiting Lady Lions of East Mississippi Community College earned a divisional split with Northwest Mississippi at Ranger Field. Though dropping the opening game, 9-2, to the Lady Rangers, EMCC maintained its lead atop the MACJC’s North Division standings.
In Saturday’s second contest, the Lady Lions rallied from a 4-2 deficit to score five runs in the top of the seventh inning to salvage the twinbill split and improve their division-leading record to 10-2 on the year. Following a groundout to open the seventh, EMCC cut the deficit to 4-3 on consecutive singles by DeShuni Sanders, Jessie Clark and Mallory Pace. Pace then stole second and followed Clark around to score on an errant throw to second base on the stolen base attempt. With the bases empty, freshman Lainie Simcox drilled her team-leading fourth home run of the year to center field to put the visitors on top 6-4. With seven hits in the final frame, EMCC added an unearned run to account for the final margin. Combining for 15 hits as a team in the nightcap, Simcox and sophomore Cayla Coleman led the Lady Lions’ offensive attack with three hits apiece. A former Southeast Lauderdale product, Simcox also had an RBI-double in the fourth inning. Sanders and fellow sophomore outfielder Leigh Ellen Barefield each added a pair of singles for the winners. In the circle for the Lady Lions, sophomore right-hander Nashedra Barry raised her record to 4-1 on the year with the complete-game victory in the second contest. The former Columbus High School standout scattered five hits over seven innings, while striking out two and allowing three walks. Only one of the four runs allowed by Barry was earned, as each team committed three errors in the nightcap. The home-standing Lady Rangers out-hit EMCC, 13-7, in the opening contest, while putting up runs during four of their six turns at the plate. Limiting the Lady Lions to seven singles in halting their five-game winning streak, Northwest’s Magen Fullwood evened her season record to 6-6 with the complete-game triumph. Dropping to 10-8 on the year, freshman Amy Johnson took the loss for the visitors. Sanders and Pace each went 2-for-3 at the plate in the opener for the Lady Lions. After scoring an unearned run in the first inning, EMCC put together four singles in succession in the third to even the score at 2-2. However, the Lady Rangers answered with three runs on four hits in the bottom half of the third to move back on top for good. Northwest added a solo run in the fifth and three more tallies an inning later to finish out the scoring. Head coach Kate Neely’s 14-15 EMCC Lady Lions return home to play host to division foe Northeast Mississippi Tuesday (April 5) afternoon on the Scooba campus. Doubleheader action at the EMCC Softball Field is set to begin at 3 p.m. |
