SCOOBA – Limited to 12 hits on the day, the Lions of East Mississippi Community College were swept, 11-2 and 7-2, by visiting Northwest Mississippi in divisional baseball action Thursday afternoon at EMCC’s Gerald Poole Field.

In the opener, the Rangers tallied two runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings off EMCC starter Blake Hutcheson before the Lions could get on the scoreboard with a solo run in the sixth.  Leading 6-1 heading into the final inning, Northwest added five more scores in the seventh while EMCC managed a second run in the bottom half of the frame before leaving the bases loaded to end the contest.

Along with being backed by the six-hit, complete-game pitching of freshman Garrett Radicioni, the Rangers banged out 14 hits while also benefitting from six stolen bases and three turned double plays in the opener.

Hutcheson, a freshman from Saltillo, pitched into the seventh inning for the Lions in the first contest, but fell to 1-5 on the year with the setback.  Offensively for EMCC, sophomore Tyler Aldridge led the way with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate in the opener.

The home-standing Lions struck first in the nightcap with a second-inning RBI single from Stephen Hudson that scored Zane Migues, who led off the frame with a double to left field.  A freshman from Lafayette, La., Migues later drove in EMCC’s second run of the game with a two-out, run-scoring single in the fifth.

After evening the score at 1-1 with an unearned run in the third inning, Northwest established control of the second game by posting consecutive two-run innings in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames.  A two-run double by Austin Overall in the fourth was followed by Jeremy Carlisle’s two-run home run off EMCC middle reliever Gabe Franks in the fifth and a two-out, two-run single from Dex Herrington in the sixth.

EMCC starter Justin Pritchett, now 1-3 on the season, took the loss in the nightcap, allowing three runs (two unearned) on four hits while fanning three and not issuing a walk in 3.1 innings of work.  Sophomore left-hander Cole Vaughan finished out the game for the Lions in the seventh.

Now 8-21 overall on the season and 6-4 in MACJC North Division play, head coach Chris Rose’s EMCC Lions hit the road for three straight divisional series away from home, beginning with Tuesday’s (April 5) 1 p.m. doubleheader at Northeast Mississippi.
