| EMCC earns 9-1 baseball win over Bevill State; Lions push back Northwest twinbill to Thursday |

SCOOBA – Claiming the team’s seventh victory in their last eight decisions, the Lions of East Mississippi Community College earned a 9-1 non-division home baseball win over Bevill State-Fayette Tuesday afternoon at EMCC’s Gerald Poole Field.
Currently 6-2 on the year against MACJC North Division competition, head coach Chris Rose’s EMCC Lions will resume league play Thursday (March 31) by playing host to Northwest Mississippi CC in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on the Scooba campus. The EMCC-Northwest twinbill was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but anticipated rain overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday morning caused the one-day postponement of the division contests. In Tuesday’s scheduled nine-inning contest against Bevill State, the Lions got things rolling early with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. After plating two runs on Jordan Welch’s bases-loaded wild pitch, EMCC added two more scores on RBI singles by Mitch Bohon and Brett Tortorich. The Lions struck again two innings later with five more runs on three hits to take a 9-0 lead through three innings. Freshman Zane Migues started off the third-inning rally with his second hit in as many at-bats. Following a walk to Bohon and a subsequent double-steal, Ismael Reyes knocked in the first run of the frame with a bunt single toward first base. Aaron Brady added a run-scoring double after Tortorich reached on an error, while Antwan Ratcliff and Alex Chick later produced additional runs with a fielder’s choice and sacrifice fly, respectively. After retiring nine of the first 10 Bevill State batters he faced, EMCC freshman pitcher Thomas Dorsey gave up his lone run of the game in the fourth inning when the Bears had three of their five hits on the day. A left-hander from Gulf Breeze, Fla., Dorsey evened his record to 1-1 on the year after allowing four hits over 4.2 innings of work, while striking out six batters and not issuing a walk. Freshmen Tyler Thomas and Wesley Dodd finished up the run-ruled contest in relief of Dorsey, going 1.2 and .2 innings, respectively, for the winners. Offensively, the Lions, now 8-19 overall on the season, distributed eight hits throughout their lineup, led by Migues’ 2-for-4 effort at the plate. Migues, along with Bohon, scored two runs apiece for EMCC. |
