EMCC Lady Lions extend win streak to four straight games with sweep of Southwest Tennessee Print E-mail
SCOOBA – Behind the combined four-hit pitching by sophomore Nashedra Barry, the Lady Lions of East Mississippi Community College swept visiting Southwest Tennessee CC, 1-0 and 9-1, in non-division doubleheader softball action Monday afternoon at the EMCC Softball Field.

A right-hander from Columbus, Barry threw all 13 innings of the twinbill sweep, allowing just an unearned run in the nightcap while striking out four and walking four on the day.  The former Columbus High School product improved her season mark to 3-1 on the year with the pair of pitching wins.

In the opener, EMCC sophomore Mallory Pace provided the only scoring of the game with a two-out solo home run to right-center field in the fourth inning.  A former Northeast Lauderdale standout, Pace’s third homer of the year tied her with Lainie Simcox for the club lead.

Though walking three and hitting two batters in the first game, Barry limited the visitors to just one hit - a second-inning double by Collin Jo Wood – in earning the seven-inning triumph.  Chrissy Darnell, who allowed just five Lady Lion hits, was the hard-luck loser for Southwest Tennessee.

The nightcap remained scoreless through the opening two frames before Southwest Tennessee pushed across an unearned run in the third inning.  EMCC promptly answered with three runs in both the third and fourth innings to move ahead 6-1.  EMCC’s three-run third was keyed by clutch two-out RBI singles from Jessie Clark and Simcox after the home team loaded the bases to begin the inning.  The Lady Lions added another score in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to account for the run-ruled outcome in the second contest.

With the Lady Lions banging out 11 hits as a team in the nightcap, Clark, Simcox and DeShuni Sanders led the way offensively with two hits apiece for the winners.  Clark and Paige Sheppard each drove in a pair of runs in the second game.

In the circle, Barry scattered three hits over six innings, while striking out one batter and issuing just one walk, to complete the doubleheader sweep over the Memphis-based Lady Saluqis.

Improving to 12-14 overall with their current four-game winning streak, while sitting atop the MACJC North Division standings with an 8-1 league mark, head coach Kate Neely’s EMCC Lady Lions now hit the road for the remainder of the week.  After taking on division foe Itawamba in a 3 p.m. Wednesday doubleheader in Fulton, EMCC will play a single 2 p.m. contest at Northeast Mississippi on Thursday to make up for an earlier postponement due to rain.  The Lady Lions are slated to close out the week by meeting Northwest Mississippi for a Saturday twinbill set to begin at 1 p.m. in Senatobia.
