East Mississippi Lions place fourth in Northwest-hosted MACJC golf event Print E-mail
OLIVE BRANCH – The East Mississippi Community College men’s golf team placed fourth at this week’s MACJC golf event hosted by Northwest Mississippi CC.  The state’s third junior college golf event of the spring campaign was completed Tuesday at Wedgewood Golf Club in Olive Branch following Monday’s opening-round action held at Southaven’s North Creek Golf Course.

After holding third-place honors with a 307 team score on Monday, head coach Dale Peay’s EMCC Lions shot a second-day 321 to finish 12 strokes behind third-place Copiah-Lincoln.  Host Northwest Mississippi maintained its first-round lead to outdistance three-time defending NJCAA Region 23 champion Mississippi Gulf Coast by 11 strokes (602-613).

EMCC freshman Weston Wallace earned all-tournament honors for the second time in three spring events, finishing in a fourth-place tie with a two-day score of 148 (75-73).  The former Northwest Rankin High School product also claimed all-tournament honors in his collegiate debut last month at the MGCCC-hosted event in Pass Christian.

Cameron Thomas, of host Northwest Mississippi CC, captured individual medalist honors by three strokes by following an opening-round 67 at North Creek with a 76 Tuesday at Wedgewood.

EMCC’s Bobby Bowlin, also a former Northwest Rankin standout, and fellow freshman Andrew Spiers, of Pearl River Central HS, placed 15th (81-77—158) and 17th (75-84—159), respectively, for the Lions.  A local product from DeSoto Central High School, Lion freshman Tyler Slocum tied for 20th place (82-78—160) while competing as an individual.  Sophomores Ian McAdams (79-87—166) and Jackson Bryant (78-90—168) rounded out EMCC’s scorecard by finishing 30th and 36th, respectively.

The Lions of East Mississippi CC will host the fourth and final regular-season MACJC golf event, April 3-4, at the Mississippi State University Golf Course in Starkville.  The 2011 MACJC State Golf Championship, hosted by Holmes CC, will take place April 11-12 at Deerfield in Canton.
