| EMCC Lions earn divisional baseball doubleheader split at Holmes |

GOODMAN – In a battle of early-season front-runners in the MACJC’s North Division, visiting East Mississippi Community College earned a road baseball doubleheader split at Holmes CC Tuesday afternoon. After battling back for a 5-2 win in the opener, the Lions fell by a 7-4 count in the nightcap.
Trailing Holmes by a game atop the standings heading into the afternoon, the Lions erased a 2-0 deficit in the opener by scoring five times with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Six of EMCC’s eight hits in the game came in that final frame, including a pinch-hit, two-run triple by freshman Spencer Wilson. “We’re happy to have earned a split on the road against a top divisional contender,” EMCC head coach Chris Rose said. “We showed some character and determination today to be down on the road and fight back like we did against a solid Holmes ballclub. We need to keep our intensity going, along with striving to get better each day and continuing to mature as a team.” In the opener, Tyler Aldridge and Alex Chick led the way for EMCC with 2-for-4 efforts at the plate. On the mound, Kosciusko’s Will Edwards pitched in tough luck again for the Lions, giving up two runs on four hits while pitching into the sixth inning. Fellow sophomore hurler Justin Pritchett, a former Northeast Lauderdale product, benefitted from EMCC’s late rally to pick up his first win of the season in three decisions by throwing two innings of one-hit baseball. The home-standing Bulldogs knocked out EMCC starter Blake Hutcheson, now 1-4 on the year, with a pair of first-inning runs in the second contest followed by four more scores the next frame. However, the visitors fought back in the nightcap as well by scoring two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. With two outs in the fifth, EMCC freshman Stephen Hudson singled and stole second. Aldridge, a former Caledonia High School product, put the Lions on the scoreboard by launching a two-run home run – his first of the year – to left field. The visitors manufactured two more runs in the sixth inning, including an RBI single by Mitch Bohon, to account for the final margin. Now 5-19 overall on the season and 4-2 in divisional play, the Lions of East Mississippi travel to Clarksdale to meet Coahoma in a Saturday doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m. |
