| EMCC softball team claims run-ruled home doubleheader sweep over Coahoma |

SCOOBA – The Lady Lions of East Mississippi Community College claimed a run-ruled home doubleheader softball sweep over Coahoma, 12-3 and 15-4, Tuesday afternoon on the Scooba campus.
Improving to 6-1 in MACJC North Division play, head coach Kate Neely’s EMCC squad supplied freshman starting pitcher Amy Johnson with early leads en route to coasting to the twinbill sweep over the visiting Lady Tigers. A rookie right-hander from Starks, La., Johnson raised her season record to 7-6 with the pair of complete-game victories. In both contests, Coahoma put up two runs in the top of the first inning, but the home-standing Lady Lions countered with six first-inning runs in the opener and seven tallies in the nightcap’s opening frame to reclaim early control of the games. In the opener, EMCC plated four more runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth. Freshman catcher Jessie Clark, a Clarkdale High School product, had two RBI singles to lead the Lady Lions in the first game. With 15 hits as a team on the afternoon, including nine in the second contest, the Lady Lions tacked on another seven-run inning in the third frame of the nightcap. Sophomore second baseman Cayla Coleman, also of Clarkdale High School, led the way by going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Former Southeast Lauderdale standout Lainie Simcox added a two-run single in game two after also knocking in a pair of runs in the opening contest. Making a start in the nightcap, freshman Karley Hall, of Mooreville, scored two runs and drove in two runs for the winners. In the circle, Johnson allowed six hits in the opener and seven in the nightcap, while striking out three batters in each five-inning contest. She did not issue a walk in the second game after walking two in the opener. Now 8-12 overall on the season, the EMCC Lady Lions travel to Wesson to take on Copiah-Lincoln in a Thursday non-divisional doubleheader before resuming division play in a Saturday home twinbill against Mississippi Delta. Saturday’s softball action on the Scooba campus is set to begin at 1 p.m. |
