| EMCC Lady Lions earn divisional softball twinbill split at Holmes |

GOODMAN – East Mississippi Community College’s softball bats came alive in the second game of a divisional doubleheader, as the visiting Lady Lions claimed an 11-3 nightcap win to earn a Friday afternoon split at Holmes. EMCC dropped the opener by a 2-1 tally to the Lady Bulldogs.
After being limited to just five hits in the opener by Holmes sophomore Emily Collins, the Lady Lions banged out 18 hits in the second game to salvage a road split and improve their MACJC North Division mark to 4-1 on the year. Following a scoreless first three innings in the nightcap, EMCC put up two runs in the fourth with the help of back-to-back leadoff doubles from Courtney Castleberry and Lainie Simcox. The Lady Lions then batted around the following frame, plating five more runs on six hits to move ahead 7-1. Capped by Paige Sheppard’s two-out, two-run double, the visitors added three tallies in the sixth inning and an additional run in the seventh to account for the final outcome. Two of the three Holmes runs in the nightcap came on solo home runs by Symone Simpson. EMCC freshman right-hander Amy Johnson evened her record at 5-5 on the year by going the distance for the win in the second game. The Starks, La., native gave up three runs on six hits while striking out nine and not allowing a walk over seven solid innings. Led by Simcox’s 4-for-5 performance at the plate, six different EMCC players had multiple-hit outings in the nightcap. Sophomores DeShuni Sanders, a New Hope High School product, and Nashedra Barry each had three hits and scored a pair of runs in the winning effort. In the circle during the first game, Barry was the hard-luck loser in the opener, as the former Columbus High School standout allowed two runs on eight hits while fanning two and walking four. With three of their five first-game hits coming in the sixth inning, the Lady Lions’ solo tally in the opener came on Mallory Pace’s RBI single that plated fellow sophomore Leigh Ellen Barefield, who led off the frame with a single. Jessie Clark had two singles in three at-bats to lead EMCC in the first contest. After taking advantage of EMCC’s spring break week, head coach Kate Neely’s 6-10 EMCC Lady Lions hit the road to take on perennial powerhouse LSU-Eunice in a Saturday (March 19) doubleheader beginning at noon. EMCC resumes divisional action by playing host to Coahoma on Tuesday, March 22 in a doubleheader set to begin at 2 p.m. on the Scooba campus.
