| East Mississippi CC players collect regional and state basketball honors |

SCOOBA – Four members of East Mississippi Community College’s basketball teams have been accorded postseason honors by the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges for their playing efforts during the 2010-11 regular season. The selections were voted on by the MACJC head basketball coaches during their Friday meetings in Jackson.
For head coach Mark White’s NJCAA Tournament-bound EMCC Lions, sophomores Deonte Alexander and Jonathan King were each named to the 10-man All-NJCAA Region 23 Team. In addition, Alexander was chosen to the MACJC’s All-North State First Team for the second consecutive year, while King earned second-team all-state accolades among the MACJC’s North Division schools. On the women’s side, freshman guards Chadisty Hickman and Kiara Quinones-Noa were honored for head coach Sharon Thompson’s MACJC North Division champions. Hickman, a former Kemper County High School standout, made both the All-NJCAA Region 23 Team and MACJC All-North State First Team. Having garnered second-team all-state status for the regular season, Quinones-Noa was selected to this past week’s NJCAA Region 23 All-Tournament Team in Clinton. With a four-year head coaching record of 80-35 (.696) at East Mississippi, White was named the 2010-11 MACJC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year by a vote of the league’s coaches. The former Mississippi State assistant coach also collected this year’s NJCAA Region 23 Coach of the Year award after guiding EMCC to back-to-back NJCAA Region 23 championships and consecutive MACJC North Division regular-season crowns. Alexander, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound backcourt performer, is averaging a team-leading 16.6 points per game for the 25-3 Lions and enters the upcoming NJCAA Tournament (March 15-19 in Hutchinson, Kan.) having scored 908 points during his two-year EMCC career. Along with averaging 3.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game on the year, the Nashville product paces EMCC in steals (49), made 3-pointers (82) and total field goals made (171). A 6-foot-5, 210-pound forward, King is averaging a double-double on the season for the 12th-ranked Lions, ranking fourth on the team in scoring (13.5 ppg) and standing among the top-15 leaders nationally in rebounding (10.4 rpg). En route to having registered 13 double-doubles on the season, the native of Panama is shooting 55 percent from the field and 73 percent from the charity stripe. King also joined Alexander on this past week’s NJCAA Region 23 All-Tournament Team in Clinton. For the 15-10 Lady Lions in 2010-11, Hickman topped EMCC in scoring (14.7 ppg), assists (3.9 apg) and steals (1.6 spg) while starting all 25 games as a freshman guard. Quinones-Noa, a native of Puerto Rico, ranked second on the club in scoring (10.2 ppg) and assists (3.1 apg) as a collegiate rookie. |
