SCOOBA – In the midst of a four-date homestand, the East Mississippi Community College softball team was swept 14-3 and 10-2 by preseason 12th-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Thursday afternoon at the EMCC Softball Field.
Taking advantage of a stiff breeze that preceded a line of storms which subsequently moved through the state, the visiting Lady Bulldogs slammed five home runs as part of their 26-hit attack on the afternoon. Gulf Coast also benefitted from a pair of big innings against EMCC, producing a seven-run fifth in the opener and getting on board early with a six-run opening frame in the nightcap. In Thursday’s opening contest, the two teams traded solo tallies in the first inning before the visitors went ahead 3-1 with additional runs in the second and fourth innings. The Lady Lions knotted the score at 3-3 with a two-run fourth that was highlighted by a run-scoring single by sophomore Nashedra Barry of Columbus. However, the Lady Bulldogs would put the opener out of reach by sending 13 hitters to the plate during their seven-run fifth inning. EMCC freshman starter Amy Johnson was chased following home runs by Kayla Herbert, Kris Albritton and Shajuan Buckley within a span of four batters. Gulf Coast would tack on four unearned runs off reliever Lillian Lindsey in the final inning to account for the 14-3 outcome. Barry, Lainie Simcox and Jessie Clark had two hits apiece for the Lady Lions in the opening game. Control problems by EMCC freshman starter Alex Dawkins in the first inning put the home team in an early hole during the nightcap. Aided by six walks and Herbert’s second homer of the day, Gulf Coast plated six runs in the first on just two hits. EMCC could only manage three hits off Lady Bulldog starter Linsey Dickerson in the second game, while the visitors touched Lady Lion pitching for 10 hits in five innings, including four extra-base knocks. With EMCC pushing across solo scores in the third and fifth innings, Gulf Coast cruised to the run-rule victory in the nightcap with additional runs in the second and fourth frames and two more tallies in the fifth. Head coach Kate Neely’s 2-9 Lady Lions of East Mississippi continue their current homestand by playing host to preseason 10th-ranked Copiah-Lincoln Monday (Feb. 28) in a noon doubleheader on the Scooba campus. EMCC is slated to open MACJC North Division play on Wednesday (March 2) with a 4 p.m. twinbill against Northwest Mississippi. |
