ELLISVILLE – Despite a valiant opening-day effort against perennial powerhouse LSU-Eunice, the East Mississippi Community College softball team dropped three Saturday contests at the inaugural Gwen Magee Invitational played at Jones County’s new Community Bank Park.  After falling 3-2 to LSU-E in the opener, the Lady Lions dropped a subsequent doubleheader to host JCJC by scores of 6-1 and 9-2.

To begin the full day of softball activity, EMCC jumped on the Lady Bengals of LSU-Eunice 2-0 in the first inning on a two-run home run by sophomore Mallory Pace.  LSU-E responded with a two-run shot by Sam Bella in the second to knot the score.  The score stayed tied until Tiffany Havard’s two-out RBI single plated Chaney Trahan in the top of the seventh for the go-ahead run.

Heather Abshire picked up the win for LSU-Eunice, throwing the final three innings in relief of starter Leah Andrus.  Freshman Amy Johnson was the tough-luck loser for the Lady Lions, giving up seven hits while striking out two in going the distance.

Pace, a former Northeast Lauderdale standout, added two singles along with her second homer of the year to lead EMCC offensively in the opener.

In the twinbill opener against host Jones County, the Lady Bobcats broke open a close contest with four runs in the fourth inning off EMCC freshman starter Alex Dawkins.  Lady Lion sophomore Nashedra Barry supplied EMCC’s lone run of the game with a solo home run in the fifth inning.  The Columbus native also had a single in the contest.

The home-standing Lady Bobcats put up runs in each of the first four innings of the nightcap en route to completing the doubleheader sweep of EMCC.  After Pace singled home fellow sophomore Cayla Coleman to give the visitors an early 1-0 edge in the opening frame, JCJC responded with a three-run first inning.  Down 5-1 after Jones scored twice in the second, Pace knocked in her second run of the game and fourth of the day with an RBI single in the third inning.

The Lady Bobcats added another tally in the third and three more in the fourth to account for the final outcome in the nightcap.  Johnson, who gave up eight runs while pitching into the fourth inning, took the loss for EMCC.  Lillian Lindsey and Barry also saw mound duty for the Lady Lions in the day’s final contest.

Head coach Kate Neely’s 1-6 EMCC Lady Lions will begin their home softball slate this week with rematch doubleheaders against Hinds and Mississippi Gulf Coast on Monday and Thursday, respectively.  Both twinbills are slated for 2 p.m. starting times at the EMCC Softball Field on the Scooba campus.  The Lady Lions opened the current campaign by being swept at Mississippi Gulf Coast on Feb. 9 and splitting at Hinds a week later.
