SCOOBA – Held to seven total hits on the afternoon, the Lions of East Mississippi Community College were swept 2-0 and 11-4 by visiting Pearl River in baseball action Saturday afternoon at EMCC’s Gerald Poole Field.
In the closely contested opener, the home-standing Lions squandered an opportunity to give starting pitcher Kameron Heiser an early lead in the bottom half of the second inning. Sophomore Mitch Bohon led off the inning with a double to left field and was sacrificed to third by Alex Chick. However, Caleb Melton’s subsequent bunt attempt couldn’t score the runner from third and Ismael Reyes grounded out to end the rally. Meanwhile, PRCC starting left-hander Taylor Byrd held the Lion bats in check for the first five innings before leaving the game in the sixth after walking the first two batters. Down 1-0 after Pearl River plated a solo run in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Ethan Ewoldt, the Lions let another scoring opportunity slip away in the sixth. After Chick again successfully bunted over Hilton Gibson and Bohon, who had both walked to open the frame, pinch-hitters Connor Cox and Noah Greer struck out and grounded out, respectively, to end the threat. The Lions did threaten one last time in the final inning when Tyler Aldridge doubled to left with one out. However, PRCC reliever Jared Bond got the final two outs to earn the save for the visitors. Heiser pitched into the fifth inning for the Lions, allowing five hits and just one run while striking out a pair and walking one. The Wildcats added an insurance run off EMCC reliever Zane Migues in the seventh inning to account for the final score of the first game. Byrd, the winner for PRCC, fanned nine and walked two while allowing just two hits in an impressive mound effort. In the nightcap, the Wildcats touched EMCC starter Justin Pritchett for six second-inning runs to move on top 6-0. PRCC added three more tallies the following frame to jump ahead 9-0. The Lions could not reach Pearl River starter Blake Juneau in his five innings of work, managing but a pair of singles by Aldridge in the first and third innings. It wasn’t until the sixth inning when EMCC was able to put some runs on the scoreboard with four tallies, aided by two PRCC errors and consecutive pinch-hit singles from Rusty McAlister and Aaron Brady. Head coach Chris Rose’s 1-9 East Mississippi Lions will close out the month of February with road doubleheaders at Hinds and Southwest Mississippi on Tuesday (Feb. 22) and Saturday (Feb. 26), respectively. |
