| East Mississippi caps regular-season hoops season with home sweep of Coahoma |

SCOOBA – In their final tune-up prior to next week’s MACJC State Basketball Tournament, East Mississippi Community College capped their regular-season hoops slate by sweeping visiting Coahoma Thursday night at EMCC’s Keyes T. Currie Coliseum. The 13th-ranked EMCC men’s team followed the Lady Lions’ 55-38 victory with a 73-63 triumph over the Tigers in the nightcap.
In the women’s contest, head coach Sharon Thompson’s Lady Lions maintained their double-digit halftime lead (29-19) for the better part of the second half en route to the 17-point outcome. Sophomore Kierra Jones, of Starkville, and Kemper County’s Chadisty Hickman led EMCC with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Winners of seven of their last eight games, the EMCC women will enter next week’s MACJC State Tournament sporting a 14-8 overall record and 9-3 division mark. Coupled with Itawamba’s Thursday road loss against Holmes, the Lady Lions have clinched at least a share of their second MACJC North Division regular-season title in the last three years. ICC, now 8-3 within the division will play at Mississippi Delta in a Saturday makeup game. In Thursday’s nightcap, head coach Mark White’s Lions outscored the visitors, 22-5, over the final 11 minutes of the opening half to take a 28-20 lead at the break. EMCC’s lead never dipped below seven points throughout the second stanza en route to the 10-point victory. Freshman point guard D.J. Evans led all scorers Thursday with 26 points, including 13-of-18 shooting from the charity stripe. The former All-Metro Jackson selection at Brandon High School added four assists, three rebounds and two steals for the Lions. Sophomore forward Jonathan King followed with 17 points for the winners. Now 20-3 overall and back-to-back champions of the MACJC’s North Division with this year’s 11-1 league mark, the top-seeded Lions will be paired with No. 4 South seed East Central in Tuesday’s opening round of the MACJC State Tournament. The EMCC men swept the Warriors during the regular season, winning 90-57 in Decatur and again in Scooba by an 81-77 final back in November. Women’s tournament play begins Monday at Copiah-Lincoln’s Mullen Gymnasium in Wesson. |
