.jpg "Image") In preparation for state tournament and regional tourney play the next two weeks, the EMCC basketball teams close out their regular-season hoops slate Thursday by playing host to Coahoma during “Sophomore Night” festivities. Tip-off times are set for 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at EMCC’s Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus. With tip-off times slated for 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., EMCC will be honoring sophomore players and managers during pre-game ceremonies. In addition, attending fans are encouraged to wear pink to Thursday’s regular-season hoops finale to recognize the WBCA’s Pink Zone venture in support of raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Ranked 13th nationally in this week’s NJCAA poll, head coach Mark White’s 19-3 EMCC Lions have secured their second straight MACJC North Division championship with Monday’s last-second 69-68 victory at ICC. The defending NJCAA Region 23 champions and reigning NJCAA Tournament participants have posted a 46-10 overall record and 20-3 division mark over the past two seasons combined. In this year’s MACJC men’s standings, Itawamba presently remains second behind EMCC with a 6-4 division record, followed closely by Northeast Mississippi (6-6), Coahoma (5-6), Mississippi Delta (4-6), Northwest Mississippi (3-7) and Holmes (3-7). In the South, ninth-ranked Pearl River (19-3, 9-2) has clinched the men’s top seed over second-place Mississippi Gulf Coast (9-3). Jones County (7-4), East Central (6-5) and Copiah-Lincoln (5-6) are all fighting for spots in next week’s MACJC State Basketball Tournament. Winners of six of their last seven decisions, head coach Sharon Thompson’s 13-8 Lady Lions put added pressure on Itawamba’s quest for a regular-season division title with Monday’s 57-56 road win over the Lady Indians. Sitting at 8-3 in division play right behind 8-2 ICC, an EMCC victory over Coahoma Thursday coupled with an Itawamba road setback at either Holmes (Thursday) or Mississippi Delta (Saturday) would give the Lady Lions a share of their second MACJC North Division women’s title in the last three years. The EMCC women are a combined 53-28 overall and 27-8 in league play dating back to the 2008-09 campaign. Trailing front-running ICC and EMCC in the MACJC North Division women’s standings are Holmes (6-4), Northeast (6-6), Northwest (4-6), Delta (3-7) and Coahoma (2-9). Eighth-ranked Copiah-Lincoln (19-1, 11-0) has clinched the South Division title and earned the honor of hosting next week’s (Feb. 21-24) MACJC State Basketball Tournament at Mullen Gymnasium in Wesson. Also jockeying for position in advance of next week are the Jones County women (9-2), Pearl River (7-4) and Mississippi Gulf Coast (6-6). Following next week’s MACJC State Tournament, to be hosted by Copiah-Lincoln Community College, will be the 2011 NJCAA Region 23 Basketball Tournament, set for Feb. 28-March 3 at A.E. Wood Coliseum on the Mississippi College campus in Clinton. The Pearl River men and Jones County women are the defending state basketball champions, while the EMCC Lions and Co-Lin Lady Wolves are the reigning NJCAA Region 23 hoops champions. |
