MOORHEAD – East Mississippi Community College’s basketball winning streaks were snapped Saturday afternoon at Mississippi Delta with the Lady Lions falling 48-41 and the 11th-ranked Lions being edged 71-70 in a makeup doubleheader played at MDCC’s newly renovated J.T. Hall Coliseum.  The rescheduled games were postponed from earlier in the week due to wintry weather conditions.

Head coach Sharon Thompson’s EMCC women trailed for most of the contest against the Lady Trojans en route to having their five-game win string snapped.  Now 12-8 overall, the Lady Lions are still solidly positioned in second place behind Itawamba with a 7-3 mark in MACJC North Division play.

Sophomore Kierra Jones, of Starkville, was the only Lady Lion in double figures with 14 points.  Former Kemper County standout Chadisty Hickman and sophomore Jamie Gunter, of Columbus, followed with nine and eight points, respectively, for the visitors.

In the nightcap, head coach Mark White’s first-place Lions fought back from a double-digit deficit midway through the second half to have a chance to tie the contest from the free-throw line with three seconds remaining in regulation.  However with EMCC trailing 71-69, sophomore forward Jonathan King missed the first of two charity tosses to thwart the comeback attempt and halt the Lions’ eight-game winning streak.

Meridian’s Donovan Walker and freshman point guard D.J. Evans, of Brandon, paced the Lions with 17 points apiece.  Sophomore Deonte Alexander and King added nine and eight points, respectively, for the visitors, who fell to 18-3 overall and suffered their first division setback in 10 league decisions on the year.

Heading into the MACJC’s final week of the regular season, the East Mississippi basketball teams travel to Fulton to meet Itawamba Community College Monday evening.  Tip-off times at ICC’s Davis Event Center are slated for 6 and 8 p.m.
