PERKINSTON – The East Mississippi Community College softball team ran into a hard-hitting Mississippi Gulf Coast squad Wednesday afternoon, as the preseason 12th-ranked Lady Bulldogs swept the visiting Lady Lions, 8-0 and 8-1, in EMCC’s season debut.
In Wednesday’s opener, Gulf Coast’s Linsey Dickerson tossed a five-inning no-hitter against EMCC. The Lady Bulldog hurler fanned nine batters and allowed only one walk during her shutout victory. Lady Lion freshman Amy Johnson took the loss in her collegiate debut. In the nightcap, the Lady Lions managed six hits off MGCCC starter Bayleigh Babin but could only plate a fifth-inning run. Former Southeast Lauderdale High School standout Lainie Simcox led off the fifth with a double and came around to score on a triple by former Clarkdale product Courtney Castleberry. Lady Lion freshman Cory Roberson, also a former Clarkdale performer, had a pair of singles in the second contest, while fellow Clarkdale alum Jessie Clark and New Hope’s DeShuni Sanders each added singles for the visitors. Freshman Lillian Lindsey, of Central Academy, earned the second-game loss for the Lady Lions. Head coach Kate Neely’s 0-2 EMCC Lady Lions return to action on Wednesday (Feb. 16) with a road doubleheader against Hinds Community College in Raymond. |
