PASS CHRISTIAN – The East Mississippi Community College men’s golf team placed sixth in the season-opening event of the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College’s spring schedule completed Monday at The Oaks Golf Club.

Head coach Dale Peay’s EMCC Lions carded a two-day total of 678 (338-340) at the tournament hosted and won by Mississippi Gulf Coast CC.  Finishing 18 strokes better than runner-up Copiah-Lincoln (615-633), the MGCCC Bulldogs are three-time defending NJCAA Region 23 champions and the reigning MACJC state champions.  Northwest Mississippi placed third with a 662 team score.

Individually for East Mississippi, freshman Weston Wallace tied for sixth-place honors with Gulf Coast’s Drew Seals in his collegiate debut.  The former Northwest Rankin product added a final-day 82 with Sunday’s 5-over-par 77 to finish with a 159 total.  MGCCC’s Marcus Fox edged Co-Lin’s Bennett Ruschewski by a single stroke (151-152) to claim individual medalist honors at the 7,006-yard, par-72 layout.

Sophomore Zack Bailey, of Caledonia, was next for the Lions with a 171 (80-91) total, followed by freshman Bobby Bowlin, another former Northwest Rankin standout, at 175 (94-81).  EMCC’s scorecard for the year’s initial MACJC event was rounded out by Tyler Slocum (95-83—178), Ian McAdams (94-86—180) and Jackson Bryant (87-94—181).

The MACJC’s second golf event of the spring campaign, hosted by Copiah-Lincoln CC, will take place March 6-7 in Wesson/Brookhaven.
