| East Mississippi Community College sends 20 football players to four-year schools |

 EMCC head football coach Buddy Stephens will send 20 players from the Lions’ football program to four-year schools for the 2011 football campaign, including (L-R) Jimmy Roby, Trevor Wallace and Cleveland Shelton. An NJCAA All-American Second Team selection as a sophomore defensive lineman for the EMCC Lions, Dial signed his National Letter of Intent with the University of Alabama. The 6-foot-6, 325-pound standout from Clay-Chalkville (Ala.) High School will join former EMCC teammate Brandon Lewis with the Crimson Tide. Lanier, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive back, has inked with the University of Tennessee after sitting out the 2010 football season at EMCC. Having starred on the Lions’ 2009 MACJC state championship squad, the Gordo, Ala., native will have three seasons of eligibility with the UT Volunteers. Signing with Conference USA members during the mid-semester break in December were defensive backs Johnny Cockrell and Perrance Ward. A former West Point High School product, Ward signed with the University of Memphis, while Cockrell, a Columbus native, has reunited with former EMCC teammates Pat Shed, T.J. Ballou, Quartney Cox and Billy Autrey at UAB. Five former East Mississippi Lions will move onto three different Southland Conference football programs. Starkville’s Brad Henderson, a 2010 NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention pick at quarterback for EMCC, and defensive back Fred Tate, from Noxubee County, joined the Northwestern State (La.) University program at the mid-semester break in December. Defensive linemen Devin Hawkins (Caledonia HS) and Cleveland Shelton (East Oktibbeha HS) will be reunited with former Lion teammates Derrick Steele and Jermayne Lett at the University of Central Arkansas. Meridian’s Kevin Roberts will join defensive lineman C.J. Jenkins, a Southeast Lauderdale product, at Southeastern Louisiana University. EMCC will also be represented in the Ohio Valley Conference and Southwestern Athletic Conference with offensive lineman Trevor Wallace (Itawamba AHS) and defensive back Lakendrick Carter (Kosciusko HS) heading to Murray State University and Mississippi Valley State University, respectively. Joining them in the Gulf South Conference (NCAA Division II) will be running back Trayshun King (Columbia HS) and linebacker Jimmy Roby (Noxubee County HS) at Arkansas Tech University and the University of West Alabama, respectively. Roby will join forces with former EMCC defensive standouts Gabe Poe, Alvin Ellis and John Rice at UWA. Also heading to NCAA Division II football programs from EMCC will be wide receiver Andre Taylor to Northeastern State (Okla.) University of the Lone Star Conference and former Newton County running back Floyd Graves to Miles College (Ala.) of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In addition, former EMCC players Chris Bertucci (Gulfport HS) and C.J. Odom (Fort Myers, Fla.) are invited walk-ons at the University of Memphis and Western Kentucky University, respectively.
