SCOOBA – The 19th-ranked Lions of East Mississippi picked up their 10th win of the year with a 93-88 home triumph over Marion Military Institute Friday evening at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus.

Sophomores Donovan Walker (21), Deonte Alexander (20) and Jonathan King (20) combined for 61 points to help lead head coach Mark White’s EMCC Lions to their fifth straight win of the campaign.

In their final action before the holidays, the 10-1 Lions used a 14-3 run midway through the opening half to break open a close contest and pull away for a 41-29 halftime advantage.

Following the break, EMCC opened up a 58-44 margin eight minutes into the second stanza, before the visiting MMI Tigers scored seven unanswered points to cut the deficit in half (58-51) by the 10:16 mark.  The Lions came out of a timeout and soon built the lead back up to double figures.  Marion Military hung tough the remainder of the way and tallied five late points during the closing seconds to slice a twin-digit margin to five points by the final buzzer.

In addition to his season-high 20 points, King notched his third double-double of the year with a game-most 12 rebounds.  Walker, a former Meridian High School standout, added seven boards to his 21 points (15 in the second half), while freshman point guard D.J. Evans contributed 10 points along with seven assists to the winning effort.

Falling to 7-5 on the year, Marion Military was led by Cornel Knight’s game-high 22 points.  Terry Leake Jr., of Memphis, added 17 points for the visitors.

The East Mississippi basketball teams now take a break for the holidays, before returning to action on Wednesday, Jan. 5 in a home hoops doubleheader against Shelton State.  Game times are set for 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at EMCC’s Currie Coliseum.
