EMCC basketball teams open week-long home stand by hosting Jones County Monday Print E-mail
SCOOBA – The East Mississippi basketball teams look to continue their early-season hoops success by hosting a pair of doubleheaders this week on the Scooba campus.  After playing host to Jones County on Monday, the EMCC squads will begin MACJC North Division play by welcoming Holmes on Thursday.

With women’s action preceding the men’s games, tip-off times are set for 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. both days at EMCC’s Keyes T. Currie Coliseum.

The EMCC basketball teams enter this week’s home competition sporting a combined 11-3 record despite having played away from home in six of their first seven outings of the season.  Through the first three weeks of the campaign, EMCC’s only prior home action resulted in a rematch sweep of East Central on Nov. 18.

After opening the year with road setbacks against Jones County and East Central, head coach Sharon Thompson’s 5-2 EMCC Lady Lions sport a current five-game winning streak following neutral-site victories over Alabama Southern (64-49) and Baton Rouge (71-63) last week at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic played in Perkinston.

Entering the week ranked 16th nationally in the most recent NJCAA poll, head coach Mark White’s 6-1 EMCC Lions most recently split a pair of games last week at Shelton State’s tournament played in Tuscaloosa.  After having their season-opening, five-game win string snapped with a 75-67 setback to host Shelton State, the EMCC men bounced back with a 78-60 victory over Bevill State.

Monday’s doubleheader against Jones County will mark an inter-divisional rematch of this year’s season openers.  Four weeks ago (Nov. 1) in Ellisville, the EMCC Lions tipped off the current campaign by earning a 98-92 road win over the home-standing Bobcats.  In the women’s season opener, the two-time reigning MACJC state champion JCJC Lady Bobcats claimed an 85-73 triumph over the visiting Lady Lions.
