UTICA – The East Mississippi basketball teams collected their first doubleheader sweep of the new campaign Monday night with a pair of road wins over Hinds at J.D. Boyd Gym.  After the EMCC women picked up their first win of the year with a 74-56 victory in the opener, the 3-0 Lions completed Monday’s sweep by earning a 76-62 win in the nightcap.

In Monday’s opener, head coach Sharon Thompson’s Lady Lions maintained a 31-17 halftime lead on their way to earning their first win in three tries on the year.  With five players scoring in double figures against Hinds, the EMCC women were led in scoring for the third time this season by former Kemper County High School standout Chadisty Hickman.  The freshman guard had 16 points, followed by New Orleans native Raven Howard with 14.  Fellow newcomer Kiara Quinones-Noa of Puerto Rico, Starkville’s Kierra Jones and RoTasha Windom all added 10 points apiece to the winning effort.  A sophomore forward from Kemper County, Windom recorded her second straight double-double with a team-most 10 rebounds to go along with her 5-of-6 shooting from the field.

Raven Hubbard registered a double-double for Hinds (1-2) with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Alneshia Day added 12 points off the bench.

In the nightcap, head coach Mark White’s Lions built on a 29-28 halftime lead to pull away with the 14-point triumph despite losing the lead in the second half.  Sophomores Joe McCoy and Jonathan King along with freshman point guard D.J. Evans combined to score 39 of their collective 52 points in the second half of the contest.  A newcomer from Brandon, Evans finished with 20 points on the night, followed by McCoy and King with 18 and 14 points, respectively.

Dropping to 0-3 on the year, Hinds was led by Derek Burks with a game-high 21 points.  Erik Burks and Trevis Thomas added 15 points apiece for the Bulldogs.

The East Mississippi basketball teams wrap up their season-opening stretch of four straight road doubleheaders by playing at Meridian Community College Thursday night.  Women’s action is set to begin at 6 p.m., followed by an 8 p.m. men’s contest at MCC’s Graham Gymnasium.  East Mississippi will tip off its home slate one week from Thursday (Nov. 18) by playing host to East Central at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus.
