| EMCC men rout East Central 90-57 to earn basketball road split Saturday |

DECATUR – The East Mississippi men’s basketball team moved to 2-0 on the year by breezing to an easy 90-57 road triumph over East Central Saturday afternoon at the Brackeen-Wood Physical Education Building. The EMCC women dropped a 70-65 decision to the Lady Warriors in the opener despite leading for much of the contest.
After spotting the home-standing Warriors an early 5-0 lead, head coach Mark White’s 29th-ranked EMCC Lions quickly gained control of the contest by moving out to a 40-25 halftime advantage. Despite the home team shooting 18 more free throws in the nightcap, the Lions used their stifling defense and balanced scoring attack to coast to the 33-point road victory. Sophomore guard Joe McCoy, a product of Raymond High School, paced a quartet of EMCC double-digit scorers with a career-high 20 points. Fellow sophomore backcourt standout Deonte Alexander (Nashville, Tenn.) followed with 18 points, including four made 3-pointers, while Meridian’s Donovan Walker and freshman point guard D.J. Evans of Brandon added 11 points apiece in the winning effort. The East Central men, now 2-1 on the season, were led by Chris McLendon and Curtis Loving with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Despite owning the advantage for much of the game, including holding a 38-34 halftime edge, head coach Sharon Thompson’s EMCC Lady Lions fell for the second time in as many road outings to begin the season. Individually for the EMCC women, freshman guard Chadisty Hickman, a product of Kemper County High School, led the Lady Lions for the second straight game with 18 points. Puerto Rico native Kiara Quinones-Noa followed with 17 points, while Natalie Tate of Columbus and RoTasha Windom, another former Kemper standout, added 11 points apiece. The 2-1 Lady Warriors received a game-high 26 points from Ja’Monica Orton and 18 points by Quentinette Odom. As part of their season-opening stretch of four consecutive road doubleheaders, the East Mississippi basketball teams travel to Utica to meet Hinds Monday night. EMCC will then play at Meridian Community College in a Thursday hoops twinbill set to begin at 6 p.m. |
