EMCC men's rodeo team claims first place at West Alabama-hosted event Print E-mail
SCOOBA – In just their third rodeo competition in program history, the East Mississippi Community College Lions claimed the men’s team title of the 14th Annual UWA Rodeo Showdown held this past weekend on the University of West Alabama campus in Livingston.

The East Mississippi men’s squad earned 260 points in steer wrestling competition and solidified the victory by totaling 455 points in the team roping event for a composite total of 715 points.  Host West Alabama finished a distant second in the men’s competition with 460 points at UWA’s Don C. Hines Rodeo Complex, followed by the University of Tennessee at Martin and Missouri Valley College with 450 points apiece.

“I’m certainly very proud of the fact that everyone contributed points in this team victory,” EMCC head rodeo coach Morgan Goodrich said.  “It’s a great feeling to see everyone come together as a team.  That closeness we’re experiencing, along with their competitiveness and some luck of the draw, had a lot to do with our success this past week.”

For the EMCC Lions, freshman Will Lummus dominated the steer wrestling event by posting the top two times of the competition to claim first-place honors.   The former Oak Hill Academy standout posted a time of 4.3 seconds in the long round and topped that effort with a 4.1 clocking in the short go to earn the maximum 180 points.  Sophomore Carson Bright of Eupora tied for third place in steer wrestling to give EMCC an additional 80 points.

“Will drew well and took advantage of the opportunity with an excellent performance in the steer wrestling,” Goodrich added.  “We also racked up a lot of points in the team roping event, which helped us move up in the regional standings (Ozark Region).”

It was in the team roping competition where East Mississippi out-distanced the field by collecting 455 team points.  Rallying from a non-scoring long go effort,  the tandem of Louisville’s Cody Warner and Jake Pollard of West Point High School bounced back to post an event-best performance of 6.7 seconds in the short go to place second and earn 220 points between them.  Former Noxubee County High School product D.D. Hunt teamed up with Troy University’s Lane Taylor for third place to give EMCC 95 points, while Bright paired with Taylor White, another Oak Hill Academy alum, to garner 140 combined points for a fourth-place tie in team roping.

Troy University won the women’s competition with 315 points, followed closely by host West Alabama and UT Martin with 260 and 255 points, respectively.

The East Mississippi rodeo teams travel to Troy, Ala., this week (Oct. 14-16) to participate in the Troy University-hosted Trojan Stampede Rodeo at the Pike County Cattlemen’s Association Complex.
