| East Mississippi adds assistants to basketball coaching staffs |

SCOOBA – East Mississippi men’s basketball coach Mark White has hired former Mississippi State guard Billy Begley as an assistant coach, while EMCC women’s basketball coach Sharon Thompson has added Columbus native Edwond Eddings to her Lady Lions coaching staff. The school’s basketball staff additions have been approved by EMCC President Dr. Rick Young and EMCC Vice President/Director of Athletics Mickey Stokes.
Begley and White previously worked together for four seasons (2004-07) at Mississippi State, where Begley was a four-year letterman as a walk-on guard for the Bulldogs while White was serving as an assistant coach on Rick Stansbury’s MSU staff. Following a five-year playing career at State, Begley stayed onboard at his alma mater in a support role on Stansbury’s 2008-09 staff while completing his master’s degree in business administration. With both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Mississippi State, Begley most recently served as an assistant men’s basketball coach this past season on J.P. Piper’s coaching staff at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La. A native of Henderson, Ky., Begley saw action in 41 career games as a three-time team co-captain for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Having graduated with cum laude honors in business management from MSU in 2007, Begley was a four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. During his combined six-year association with the MSU men’s basketball program, Begley was affiliated with Bulldog teams that made four NCAA Tournament appearances, an NIT semifinal-round berth, an SEC overall championship and league tournament title, and three SEC Western Division crowns. Begley replaces former EMCC men’s assistant Jeremy Shulman, who is now the head men’s basketball coach at Brevard Community College in Florida. Eddings, a two-year basketball letterman for former head coach Clay Armstrong at East Mississippi Community College, returns to the Magnolia State after spending the past five seasons at Arkansas Tech University. Following his playing days at the Russellville-based school, Eddings served two seasons as a student assistant on Mark Downey’s Tech coaching staff and most recently spent the 2009-10 campaign as the staff’s graduate assistant coach. During Eddings’ three seasons on staff at Tech, the Wonder Boys posted a 71-22 composite record. Eddings earned his bachelor’s degree in history and political science from Arkansas Tech after completing his associate’s degree in liberal arts from EMCC in 2005. He served as team captain for the Lions’ 2004-05 club and capped his junior college basketball career at East Mississippi by participating in the 2005 MACJC All-Star Game as a member of the North Division squad. Prior to beginning his collegiate career on the Scooba campus, Eddings played for head coach Sammy Smith at Columbus High School. He served as team captain and was the recipient of the Falcons’ Sportsmanship Award as a prep senior in 2002-03. Eddings’ older brother, Cadarrall, was a three-year starter in basketball at the University of West Alabama prior to serving as an assistant basketball coach at EMCC. Eddings replaces former EMCC women’s assistant Guy Coleman. |
