SCOOBA – East Mississippi men’s basketball coach Mark White has put the finishing touches on the Lions’ recruiting class with the signing of point guard D.J. Evans of Brandon High School.

An All-Metro Second Team selection by The Clarion-Ledger newspaper, Evans averaged 20.3 points, 3.4 assists and 2.3 steals per game as a senior for head coach Fred Barnes’ 23-8 Brandon Bulldogs this past season.  Evans’ 2009-10 campaign was highlighted by a 52-point performance against Warren Central in which the 5-foot-8 playmaker hit 14-of-23 shots from beyond the three-point arc.

“D.J. comes from a very successful basketball program at Brandon as well as having a very supportive family background,” said White, the reigning NJCAA District 15 Coach of the Year.  “Most recruiting services have D.J. rated among the top 20 prospects in the state of Mississippi, because he is a very talented playmaker who makes excellent decisions with the basketball.”

Evans joins previously announced EMCC men’s basketball signees: Raymond Walters (5-11, G, New Hope HS); Rickey McCollum (5-9, G, Caledonia HS); Marcus Heidelberg (6-7, F, Quitman HS); Millaun Brown (6-6, F, West Bolivar HS); Darris Ollie (6-5, F, S.V. Marshall HS); Tradarrius McPhearson (6-2, G, Raymond HS); and Dione Milsap (5-11, G, Yazoo County HS).

The EMCC Lions will also return six players from last year’s 27-7 ballclub that won the MACJC’s North Division crown and claimed the NJCAA Region 23 championship en route to making the school’s first appearance in the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.
