SCOOBA – Advancing to postseason play for the second straight year, the Lady Lions of East Mississippi will meet the two-time defending state champions of Copiah-Lincoln Thursday afternoon in opening-day action of the 2010 MACJC State Softball Tournament being held on the Itawamba campus in Fulton.
Set to begin at 2 p.m. at ICC’s Softball Complex, EMCC’s first-round contest against the third-seeded Lady Wolves of Co-Lin is slated to be aired online at www.colinathletics.com and broadcast locally in the Wesson area on WMJU-FM (104.3). South Division champion East Central will meet fourth-seeded Holmes from the North Division Thursday at noon to begin the two-day, single-elimination tournament. Other opening-day pairings will have No. 1 North seed and host Itawamba taking on fourth-seeded Pearl River of the South Division at 4 p.m., followed by South runner-up Mississippi Gulf Coast against No. 3 North seed Northwest Mississippi at 6 p.m. Seeded second in the North Division, head coach Kate Neely’s EMCC Lady Lions completed the regular season with a 20-29 overall record and 18-6 league mark to finish as divisional runners-up to 20-4 Itawamba. East Mississippi enters postseason play having won 12 of its last 16 division games, including a 10-game division win streak earlier this month. Most recently, the Lady Lions were swept by Northwest Mississippi, 6-2 and 9-0, this past Monday in Senatobia. During the regular season, Copiah-Lincoln took three of four games from EMCC. The two teams split a season-opening doubleheader in Scooba with the Lady Lions claiming a 6-3 win in the first game and dropping an 11-3 decision in the nightcap. Two weeks later in Wesson, the Lady Wolves swept visiting EMCC by scores of 7-3 and 13-5. The winner of Thursday’s EMCC-Co-Lin matchup will advance to meet the East Central-Holmes winner Friday at noon. The other semifinal-round game will take place at 2 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. championship contest. In last year’s MACJC State Softball Tournament hosted by Co-Lin, the EMCC Lady Lions dropped a 9-2 first-round decision to Mississippi Gulf Coast in making their first state tournament appearance since 2002. |
