| EMCC softball sweeps at Northeast to keep share of division lead |

BOONEVILLE –- The East Mississippi softball team used a 10-run third inning in Friday’s opener to cruise to a road doubleheader sweep, 13-0 and 10-2, of Northeast Mississippi at Booneville City Park.
EMCC’s sweep over the Lady Tigers, coupled with Itawamba’s home sweep over Mississippi Delta, have the Lady Lions and ICC tied atop the MACJC’s North Division standings with identical 12-2 league marks. After posting solo runs in each of the first two innings, the Lady Lions sent 14 batters to the plate in the third en route to scoring the 10 runs on eight hits and aided by four NEMCC errors. In the frame, freshman Nashedra Barry of Columbus and sophomore Portia Randle of Starkville each had a pair of singles and scored twice. As part of EMCC’s 15-hit attack in the opener, freshman Celeste Fontenot went 3-for-4 with a first-inning double and two run-scoring singles. Freshmen DeShuni Sanders, Justine Jenkins and Mallory Pace all had two hits apiece for the visitors in the first game. Meanwhile in the circle for East Mississippi, sophomore Courtney Nunn faced just three hitters over the minimum in the run-ruled, five-inning contest. The veteran right-hander only surrendered two hits – a first-inning double by Camille Smith and a fifth-inning single by Robin Franks – while striking out eight and walking but two to pick up her 12th victory of the season. In the nightcap, the Lady Lions evenly distributed 14 hits throughout the lineup, as every EMCC starter had at least one hit in the contest. Sanders, Barry and Fontenot again added two hits each, while freshman Leigh Ellen “Hootie” Barefield joined the hit parade with a pair of singles. As the starting pitcher, Barry collected her first collegiate victory by allowing four hits and just one walk over the initial 2.1 innings. Nunn was effective in relief after inheriting a 3-2 lead from Barry in the third. Over the final 4.2 innings, the Jonesboro, La., native recorded six more strikeouts, while allowing just a fifth-inning single to Danielle Frederick. Head coach Kate Neely’s 14-25 EMCC Lady Lions continue divisional action by playing host to Coahoma Monday afternoon in a 2 p.m. doubleheader on the Scooba campus. |
