SCOOBA – East Mississippi sophomore standouts CoCo Ware, John Harris and Martika Hull will put the finishing touches on their productive junior college playing careers by participating in Thursday’s annual Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-Star Basketball Games in Decatur.
Hosted by East Central Community College, women’s all-star action is set to tip off at 5 p.m., followed by the men’s contest at 7 p.m. in the Brackeen-Wood Physical Education Building. Admission for the all-star doubleheader will be $5 per person. Former teammates at Starkville High School, Ware and Harris have been instrumental in helping to turn around EMCC’s basketball fortunes under the guidance of 2009-10 NJCAA District 15 Coach of the Year Mark White. In their two seasons in Scooba, the tandem helped lead the Lions to a composite record of 44-18, including the most acclaimed season in the history of the EMCC men’s basketball program this past year. Highlighted by the school’s first-ever appearance in the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship last week in Hutchinson, Kan., the 2009-10 EMCC Lions registered marks of 27-7 overall and 10-2 in league play en route to claiming the MACJC North Division regular-season title, finishing as state runners-up and winning the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament to advance to the national tournament. A preseason second-team NJCAA All-American and two-time NJCAA All-Region 23 selection, Ware totaled 1,196 points (19.3 ppg), 382 rebounds (6.2 rpg), 168 steals (2.7 spg) and 120 assists (1.9 apg) in starting all 62 games of his East Mississippi career. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound backcourt performer shot 45 percent overall from the field, including 126 career made 3-pointers, and 72 percent from the free-throw line during his two-year stint on the EMCC campus. As a sophomore, Ware ranked among the national leaders in scoring (19.4 ppg) and steals (2.5 spg) for the second straight year, in addition to ranking as the squad’s second-leading rebounder (5.9 rpg) and No. 2 playmaker (2.3 apg). A defensive specialist and valuable role player for the Lions, Harris was a 22-game starter as a sophomore after battling through an injury-plagued freshman campaign. This past season, Harris averaged 6.2 points per game and ranked as the team’s third-leading rebounder at 5.2 boards per contest. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound guard topped EMCC in field-goal percentage (56.7%) as a sophomore and ranked as the club’s second-best offensive rebounder with 68 offensive boards on the year. Hull, a product of Southeast Lauderdale High School, concluded her successful two-year playing career on the Scooba campus by scoring 847 career points (14.4 ppg) on 57-percent shooting from the field and collecting 470 career rebounds (8.0 rpg) at East Mississippi. The 5-foot-11 forward registered 18 career double-doubles, including 11 this past season en route to collecting NJCAA All-Region 23 honors. Hull helped lead head coach Sharon Thompson’s EMCC Lady Lions to a two-year composite record of 40-20, including an appearance in the 2009 NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship after capturing the NJCAA Region 23 title and earning the MACJC North Division regular-season crown. As a sophomore, Hull topped the 15-13 Lady Lions in scoring (15.5 ppg) and rebounding (8.8 rpg) in being named to the MACJC All-North State First Team for the second consecutive season. |
