| EMCC's Ware and Hull named to NJCAA All-Region 23 basketball teams |

 Sophomore standouts Martika Hull (left) and CoCo Ware have been named to the NJCAA All-Region 23 and MACJC All-North State basketball teams for their outstanding play during the course of the 2009-10 season. A repeat all-region performer, Ware leads head coach Mark White’s NJCAA Tournament-bound EMCC Lions in scoring (20.2 ppg) and steals (2.7 spg), along with ranking as the team’s No. 2 rebounder (6.1 rpg) and second-leading playmaker (2.3 apg) on the year. The former Starkville High School product is also tied for the club lead with 54 made 3-pointers and rates as the Lions’ second-best shooter from the free-throw line (73.1%). Named to this year’s Preseason NJCAA All-American Second Team, Ware is also a repeat selection to the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-North State First Team. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound backcourt performer has eclipsed the 30-point mark five times this season. Most recently, Ware was chosen to last week’s NJCAA All-Region 23 Tournament squad after scoring 80 total points over three games (26.7 ppg) to help lead the 26-5 and 12th-ranked EMCC Lions to the school’s first-ever appearance in next week’s (March 16-20) NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship in Hutchinson, Kan. For his career, Ware enters the upcoming NJCAA Tournament having totaled 1,163 points (19.7 ppg), 370 rebounds (6.3 rpg), 167 steals (2.8 spg) and 112 assists (1.9 apg) during his 59-game East Mississippi career. The veteran guard also owns career shooting percentages of 46 percent overall from the field and 72 percent from the line, while having made 121 career three-point field goals. Joining Ware on this year’s MACJC All-North State First Team is EMCC freshman guard Deonte Alexander by way of Nashville’s Glencliff High School. A 6-foot, 175-pound guard, Alexander is East Mississippi’s second-leading scorer (12.6 ppg) and top playmaker (3.5 apg) on the season. In addition, Alexander is averaging 4.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals per contest, while also sharing the club lead with 54 made three-point shots for the year. He also accompanied Ware on last week’s NJCAA All-Region 23 Tournament club after scoring 17 points on 4-of-5 three-point accuracy in EMCC’s 78-64 win over Itawamba in Thursday’s championship game. For the women, EMCC’s Martika Hull is a first-time recipient of the 10-member NJCAA All-Region 23 team honor. A former standout at Meridian’s Southeast Lauderdale High School, Hull led head coach Sharon Thompson’s 15-13 EMCC Lady Lions in scoring (15.5 ppg), rebounding (8.8 rpg), steals (2.3 spg) and field-goal percentage (52.9%) this past year. The 5-foot-11 forward recorded 11 double-doubles as a sophomore to finish with 18 double-doubles for her two-year career in Scooba. Last week in Clinton, Hull was tabbed to the NJCAA All-Region 23 Tournament team after averaging 18.5 points and 14.0 rebounds in her two regional outings. A repeat selection to the five-player MACJC All-North State First Team, Hull completed her stellar two-year EMCC career with 847 points (14.4 ppg), 470 rebounds (8.0 rpg) and 124 steals (2.1 spg). She also shot 57 percent from the field and 64 percent from the charity stripe for her career, while helping pace the Lady Lions to a two-year composite record of 40-20, including last year’s NJCAA Tournament appearance and MACJC North Division championship. |
