| EMCC drops home softball doubleheader to Southwest Mississippi |

SCOOBA – A late first-game rally fell short for the home-standing East Mississippi softball team, as the Lady Lions went on to drop 4-2 and 5-0 decisions to Southwest Mississippi Saturday afternoon the Scooba campus.
The story for the Lady Lions in Saturday’s opening game was their inability to get timely hits with runners on base. As the Lady Bears were notching solo runs in the second, fifth, sixth and seventh innings off EMCC sophomore Courtney Nunn, the Lady Lions left the bases loaded in both the fourth and fifth innings. After Southwest took a 4-0 lead in the top of the seventh, EMCC was finally able to break the ice in its half of the final frame. Sophomore outfielder Portia Randle of Starkville led off the seventh with her third hit of the contest. With one out, freshmen Celeste Fontenot and Mallory Pace followed with singles to load the bases for the third time in four innings. Cayla Coleman flied to center field for the second out, but Columbus’ Nashedra Barry singled to right to score two runs after right fielder Roxanne Lock couldn’t corral the base hit cleanly. However, Nunn struck out looking to end the rally and close out the opening contest. Making her EMCC softball playing debut after completing her freshman basketball season last week for head coach Sharon Thompson’s Lady Lions, Barry went 2-for-4 at the plate in her first outing Fontenot, from Baton Rouge, La., also had a pair of singles in the opener. As a team, the EMCC women banged out 11 hits in the first game, but stranded 11 runners on base, including six in scoring position. In Saturday’s nightcap, the visitors took another 4-0 lead with an unearned run in the third inning and three more tallies in the fourth. With only one hit through the first four innings, EMCC tried to get on the scoreboard in the fifth and sixth frames with a pair of base runners both innings. As was the case for the most part in the opener, the Lady Lions couldn’t get anyone to cross the plate despite moving runners to third base both innings. As a team, the Lady Lions could only manage four singles in the second game. Coleman, a former Clarkdale High School standout, had a pair of singles, while former New Hope product DeShuni Sanders and Fontenot each had solo safeties. Nunn, a sophomore from Jonesboro, La., took both losses on the mound for East Mississippi. In the opener, the right-hander scattered seven hits, while striking out nine and allowing just one walk. She went the distance again in the nightcap, allowing nine hits and three earned runs, along with totaling eight strikeouts and issuing three bases on balls. Head coach Kate Neely’s 2-19 EMCC Lady Lions begin MACJC North Division action Wednesday (March 10) by playing host to Northeast Mississippi in a home doubleheader set to begin at 2 p.m. on the Scooba campus. |
