| EMCC baseball team gets second no-hitter in as many days |

SCOOBA – Sophomore Tyler Richardson tossed the second no-hitter for the East Mississippi baseball team in as many days, as the Lions claimed a 4-0 series-clinching home win over John Wood Community College Saturday at Gerald Poole Field on the Scooba campus. The Lions also posted a 5-4 victory over Southwest Mississippi later in the afternoon.
A right-hander formerly of West Lauderdale High School, Richardson faced three batters over the minimum, fanning six hitters and allowing three bases on balls over seven innings. The University of North Alabama signee pitched himself into a bit of a jam in the third inning by walking the last two batters in the lineup with only one out. Richardson settled down to retire the next two hitters on fly balls. Richardson, now 2-0 on the season, did receive some solid defensive help up in the middle late in the contest to help preserve the pitching gem. In leading off the fifth inning, JWCC’s Nick Burke grounded a hard hit ball over the pitcher’s mound that was speared by EMCC shortstop Drew Vaughan on a diving stop. However, Vaughan’s throw short-hopped first baseman Hilton Gibson to allow Burke to reach first safely on a hard-luck error. In the seventh and final frame, Lion centerfielder Derek Beach came up big by making a diving grab of Adam Hightower’s sinking line drive. Richardson wrapped up the no-hitter by fanning Burke on a called third strike. Offensively, the Lions could only manage five hits themselves – three by freshman second baseman Tyler Aldridge of Caledonia. After David Williams’ second-inning sacrifice fly plated Columbus’ Billy Autrey, EMCC scored three more times in the fifth on a wild pitch that scored Aldridge, a double steal that allowed courtesy runner Thomas Hays to cross home plate, and a run-producing fielder’s choice off the bat of Mitch Bohon. In Saturday’s nightcap win over Southwest, Beach went to the mound and picked up a complete-game victory. The sophomore southpaw from Heidelberg struck out nine batters and walked but two, while scattering eight hits, to raise his record to 2-0 on the season. After the visiting Bears took a brief 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Lions followed with two runs of their own in their half of the first on a bases-loaded walk to Gibson followed by Vaughan getting hit by a pitch. EMCC manufactured two more runs an inning later by leading off the frame with three straight bases on balls. Bohon delivered a run-scoring fielder’s choice and Autrey followed with a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-1 contest. Southwest closed the gap to 4-3 in the third on back-to-back doubles by Kyle Wheeler and Brandon Simon, along with an RBI single from Thomas Daughdrill. EMCC’s eventual game-winning run came in the fourth inning. After Hays and Alex Lummus reached safely on a walk and single, respectively, Aldridge moved up both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Bohon then knocked in his third run of the day with another fielder’s choice. Head coach Tony Montgomery’s 10-6 EMCC Lions take nearly a two-week break from competition before resuming play with a two-date home stand (March 11-12) against Hibbing Community College from Minnesota. First pitches at EMCC’s Gerald Poole Field are set for 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 11 and 11 a.m. the following day. |
