EMCC softball earns 2-1 win over reigning national champions Print E-mail
HATTIESBURG – The East Mississippi softball team got back on the winning track in a notable way by notching a 2-1 win over the defending national champions of Heartland Community College Saturday in Pearl River Community College’s round-robin tournament.

EMCC sophomore right-hander Courtney Nunn picked up her second win of the season by striking out a dozen hitters and not allowing a walk in six innings of no-hit work for the Lady Lions.

Managing four singles on the day, EMCC pushed across both of its runs in the fourth inning.  Following a single by Celeste Fontenot, Courtney Castleberry was hit by a pitch and Courtney Nunn walked to load the bases.  Freshman Leigh Ellen Barefield, a former Neshoba Central product, stepped up to deliver a clutch two-run single to give the Lady Lions a 2-0 lead.

This year’s preseason No. 1 team nationally after claiming the 2009 NJCAA Division II National Championship with a 50-8 record, the Illinois-based Hawks of Heartland Community College battled back in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit in half on Rachael Anello’s sacrifice fly.  However, Nunn notched her 12th and final strikeout of the game with the potential tying run in scoring position to nail down the upset victory.

Freshmen Cayla Coleman and Laura Sanderson produced EMCC’s other two hits on the day with third-inning singles.

Having halted their 13-game losing skid with Saturday’s win in Pearl River’s tournament, head coach Kate Neely’s 2-13 EMCC Lady Lions will see their first home action since Feb. 16 by playing host to Mississippi Gulf Coast on Tuesday (March 2) in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on the Scooba campus.
