EMCC's baseball season debut postponed to Saturday versus MMI Print E-mail

Head coach Tony Montgomery’s EMCC Lions will open their 2010 baseball season this weekend with doubleheaders Saturday against Marion Military Institute and Sunday versus Copiah-Lincoln. Both twinbills are set to begin at 1 p.m. at refurbished Gerald Poole Field on the Scooba campus.
SCOOBA – Due to expected wintry weather moving into Mississippi, the debut of East Mississippi Community College’s 2010 baseball season has been postponed until Saturday on the Scooba campus.  Friday’s originally scheduled season opener against Copiah-Lincoln has been pushed back to Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at EMCC’s refurbished Gerald Poole Field.

With the revised season-opening baseball slate, head coach Tony Montgomery’s 2010 EMCC Lions will now debut Saturday against Marion Military Institute with a previously scheduled home twinbill set for a 1 p.m. start on the Scooba campus.  Sunday’s home doubleheader versus Copiah-Lincoln is also slated to begin at 1 p.m. 

Looking to bounce back from last year’s 11-37 mark, the 2010 EMCC Lions figure to rely on veteran pitching and strong defense up the middle this season.  Sophomore right-hander Tyler Richardson and second-year southpaw Derek Beach are expected to headline a promising pitching staff.  A former West Lauderdale standout, Richardson has already signed with the University of North Alabama, while Beach, a Heidelberg Academy product, will also serve as the Lions’ starting center fielder when not on the mound.

“Pitching and defense should be our strong points,” noted Montgomery, who is entering his fourth season at the Lions’ baseball helm.  “Tyler (Richardson) and Derek (Beach) should give us some consistency with our pitching staff.” 

Defensively, East Mississippi is counting on steady contributions from sophomore shortstop Brandon Kiewel and veteran catcher David Williams.  From South Dakota, Kiewel displayed great range and a strong arm as a freshman.  A former Hernando High School standout, Williams enjoyed a solid summer campaign playing in the BNA Bank Cotton States Baseball League.

In addition to relying on veteran leadership in 2010, Montgomery and assistant coach Josh Snider have brought in some local freshman talent to help with the need for increased offensive production.  New Hope’s Hilton Gibson, Tyler Aldridge of Caledonia and Columbus’ Billy Autrey all figure to supply some needed offensive punch to EMCC’s batting order. 

“We didn’t do much hitting last year and it hurt us,” Montgomery added.  “We believe we’ve brought in some guys who will really bring some pop to our offense.”
